Mystics Look To Bounce Back From Disappointing Loss
The Washington Mystics got off to an atrocious start this season. Sounds a bit harsh, right? Well, considering they did not win a single game across their first 12 outings, I think it’s fair to say that my assessment is an accurate one.
Fortunately, the team’s stock has been trending upward over the past several weeks. In their last six contests, Washington has produced four victories, putting them at 4-14 on the season. In their recent outing — a 94-91 defeat at the hands of the Connecticut Sun — six players scored in double figures, including four of the team’s starting five.
Myisha Hines-Allen scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds on a very efficient shooting night. She shot 8-of-8 from the field, 2-of-2 from beyond the arc, and she hit all three free throw attempts. It doesn’t get much better than that, folks. Stefanie Dolson added 18 points and four assists while knocking down four of her seven attempts from distance.
Despite their record, the Mystics played well at both ends of the floor. From an offensive standpoint, they shot 51.5 percent from the field and 39.3 percent from 3-point range. At the other end of the court, they held Connecticut to 43.8 percent shooting overall and 33.3 percent from distance. Unfortunately, their valiant enough wasn’t enough to win a game in which they led by a double-digit margin after the first quarter.
Aces Look To Push Their Winning Streak To Four Games
Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Aces got off to a 6-6 start through their first 12 games following a championship season that saw this team lose only six games in 2023. Since the mediocre start, however, the Aces have produced wins in each of their last three decisions.
This includes a 95-83 win against the Chicago Sky on Thursday night. In that contest, three of the team’s starting five scored in double figures. A’ja Wilson put together another solid performance. She paced the Aces’ scoring attack with 31 points, connecting on 10 of her 19 shot attempts while going 10-of-12 from the charity stripe.
The two-time WNBA champion also tallied six rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocked shots as well. It is also worth mentioning that Wilson leads the association in scoring (28.0 PPG) and rebounding (11.3), and she is tied for first in blocks, averaging 2.4 per contest. No wonder why she’s the frontrunner in the MVP conversation this season.
Jackie Young added 22 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Kelsey Plum contributed 21 points, five rebounds, and five assists on 8-of-15 shooting overall and 3-of-8 from distance.
Will the Aces extend their winning streak to four games, or will the Mystics stop the defending champions dead in their tracks?
