As Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees battle with the Baltimore Orioles for the crown of the American League East, Aaron Judge has stopped hitting home runs. In the last seven days, Judge is 4-of-22 with just two doubles and two RBI. Pitching by the Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, St. Louis Cardinals, and Washington Nationals have all kept Judge inside the ballpark.
Perhaps as a result, the Yankees record over those three series is a mediocre 5-7. The team is treading water during the Judge power outage and failing to put distance between themselves and the also struggling Orioles. Will Judge be able to get back on track?
The Decline Of Aaron Judge’s HR Pace
https://gty.im/2170113657
Back on August 25 when Judge sent home runs 50 and 51 into the thin air of Colorado and out of the ballpark, he was on a pace to hit exactly 63 home runs. The 63 mark would have exceeded Judge’s own AL record of 62 home runs set in 2022. Now, two weeks later with 12 homerless games, that pace has slowed to 57.
To put that number in historical context, only five players in the AL have ever hit 57 or more home runs. Aaron Judge has done it himself as the AL HR king. His teammates, if you will, soaring above 57 HRs in the 100+ year history of the junior league are Alex Rodriguez, Hank Greenberg, Jimmie Fox, Babe Ruth (twice), and Roger Maris. Pretty elite company. Even more elite if Aaron Judge can do it twice.
What To Expect Over The Last 19 Games Of The Season
This week the New York Yankees will host the scrappy Kansas City Royals, who find themselves 2.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the AL Central and in the second wildcard spot. Then the hated rivals from Boston arrive for the weekend. The Boston Red Sox are currently four games out of the wild card but looking to play spoiler.
The final two weeks feature three relatively weaker opponents, at least on paper, with the Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, and Pittsburgh Pirates. The key to the whole season may very well come down to the next-to-last series at home against the Orioles on September 24, 25, and 26.
What These Last Three Weeks Could Mean for Judge
Aaron Judge has homered once in three games against the Royals this season. He has taken Red Sox pitching deep three times in nine games. The Mariners have surrendered two dingers to Judge in the four games played. Judge has failed to homer in four games against the A’s. The September series with the Pirates will be the first and only one of the season. And for the most crucial series, Judge has homered three times in nine games against the Orioles. For the sake of the Yankees’ pennant hopes and Judge’s pursuit of history, some dingers are in order versus the O’s.
