A Yellow Tide in London: The Invasion of 100,000 Dortmund Fans

ans of Borussia Dortmund are seen with the flags on the tribune. The yellow wave flooded London this weekend

About 100,000 yellow fans from Germany traveled to West London’s mythical stadium to witness or at least approach the most important match of the Bundesliga’s fifth in years. About 100,000 fans journeyed from Germany to London, but there’s only space for 25,000…

The European season ends with the most important match of the year: the final of the Champions League. Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund face off at Wembley for absolute glory.

The desire to see their team win the second Champions of history, after the far one achieved in the 1996/97 edition against Juventus in Munich, generated a yellow tide—almost literal—to flood London, the venue of the final of the highest European club tournament that will play, Borussia Dortmund against Real Madrid, this Saturday at Wembley.

On one side, the tournament’s top winner aims for its 15th victory. On the other, the tournament’s revelation is looking to cause another upset that would allow it to claim its second Champions League trophy in its history. However, the trophy is not the only thing at stake in the final, as the champion will also receive an impressive sum of money.

Since Thursday, the yellow presence in London has been noticeable, mainly in the bars but also on the streets. Most notable was their presence in Hyde Park, the enormous green venue known for being the scenery of historic free concerts of mega rock bands like the Rolling Stones, Queen, and Pink Floyd.

Where the fan zone is located, they brought their music, joy, and beer to the Dortmund fans. They were well guarded by the Metropolitan Police of London, which deployed an unprecedented security device with more than 2,000 agents in service. Also, to reinforce the security measures and avoid incidents like those in the Euro 2021 final, the collaboration of 400 agents from other regions of the country has been requested.

Commander Louise Puddefoot, in charge of the police operation, said she wants “the fans who visit London to have a safe and enjoyable experience. There will be a significant police presence in Wembley, the fan zones, and other events. Anyone who sees anything suspicious or concerned about safety should speak to an officer or a security member.”

This yellow tide may generate problems if some fans who do not have tickets want to enter the stadium anyway. Despite the police’s recommendation not to travel to London without tickets, the accounts show that the majority of the Germans will stay outside the field. Both clubs received an allocation of 25,000 tickets each, while UEFA distributed the remaining 40,000.

To prevent the situation from the Euro final, when thousands of people illegally entered the stadium, the English Football Federation invested over 5 million pounds sterling. It will deploy more than 2,500 security guards at Wembley.

Another issue to keep in mind is the subway. The best way to get to the stadium is by subway, with the Bakerloo line, getting off at Wembley Stadium station. From there, one gets off and already sees the imposing scenario. Today, it is painted yellow.

The Prize

Economically, the prize for reaching the final is substantial. Each finalist club will receive 15,500,000 euros, a considerable sum for simply reaching this stage. However, the incentive for the champion is even greater since lifting the Orejona entails an additional bonus of 4,500,000 euros, leaving a total of 20,000,000 euros in prizes.

The Merengue leads in economic revenue among the competitors of this season’s Champions League. Their path to the final has been profitable, accumulating almost 90,000,000 euros in prizes. This figure includes earnings for qualifying for the tournament and bonuses for each stage surpassed and for the victories and draws obtained along the way.

For this reason, Borussia Dortmund obtained similar figures for each phase of the tournament, although its performance in terms of bonuses was slightly lower. Despite this, the German club has accumulated around 86,230,000 euros in prizes to date, an overwhelming amount, considering that in the last 11 editions, it has stayed within the quarter-finals.
