Dani Alves was one of the most famous footballers in the world. He was a stalwart for the ever-top Barcelona FC in Spain’s La Liga. He won numerous titles, trophies, and accolades throughout this illustrious playing career. But, his rape conviction has eclipsed his now-non-important footballing history.
In a world where we see athletes, politicians, and celebrities getting off Scott-free from serious charges, Dani Alves’ appeal getting overturned could be the change we need to see in the world.

Dani Alves was sentenced to over four years in prison in February after he was found guilty of sexual assault. The Catalonia court found Alves guilty of assaulting a woman in a nightclub in Spain in 2022.
Alves appealed the order. However, the victim and her lawyer stated that Alves was a flight risk due to his status, prowess, and financial means. Because of the risk of him fleeing the country to avoid the charges, the victim’s lawyer asked for more than four years behind bars.
The court decided to take a neutral stance and denied Alves’ appeal and the victim’s side. The final verdict includes Alves handing over his passport. He must stay in the country and avoid traveling until after the appeal hearing has been conducted. In the coming weeks, he must visit the Barcelona court once per week for a check-in.
The Incident in Barcelona
The main incident occurred at a Barcelona nightclub back in 2022. Reports state that Alves pushed the victim to the floor and was extremely aggressive toward her. Alves’ behavior was threatening and concerning to all involved. Not only did he assault the woman, but the aftermath was extremely traumatizing.
The victim’s legal team made it clear that the post-traumatic stress that occurred after the attack was extremely serious.
We are satisfied as the sentence recognizes what we have been saying all along: the victim was telling the truth and she suffered…I reserve the right to take legal action. It is my understanding that from a legal point of view, there should be an appeal.
On the other slide of the coin, Dani Alves’ lawyer tried to still appeal the convictions. Thankfully, the court overturned the appeal. To try and plead his case, the lawyer stated ‘I still believe in Dani Alves’ innocence.’
Plus, it doesn’t ‘help’ his case that he had sex with the victim. He told his wife that it was ‘consensual’. However, with the act of violence, admission of sex, and victim’s testimony, Alves may have admitted his own part in the attack.
We are genuinely curious, and concerned, as to how someone can believe Alves’ innocence. Eyewitness accounts and personal testimony from the victim are enough to deny his appeal and keep him in jail for decades to come.
