QB1: Commanders Empower Jayden Daniels as Starting QB

The Washington Commanders took LSU QB Jayden Daniels at No. 2 in the NFL Draft.

While it was a foregone conclusion, Jayden Daniels will be the starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders’ 2024 NFL Season, according to Fox Sports.

Daniels won the job surpassing fellow QBs Marcus Mariota and undrafted rookie Sam Hartman for the role. The 2023 Heisman Trophy winner was picked No. 2 overall during the 2024 NFL Draft.  He is also the 11th quarterback selected by Washington to take the helm for the season opener. Outside of Daniels, Robert Griffin III is the only other rookie to get the nod.  RG3 opened as the starter in the 2012 season. So yeah, this is a revolving door.

Even though the Commanders have yet to win a Preseason game this year, Daniels has impressed so far, garnering 123 yards passing in the past two games. However, Commanders’ Head Coach Dan Quinn may face some of the same fears his predecessors have faced:  Daniels likes to run.  When speaking to media Saturday after their 6-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins Quinn said, “He had another really good outing…The accuracy, the decision-making of where to go. He really is a unique competitor. But, yes, he was in trouble again with the head coach.”

ESPN reported Sunday it was a play in the first quarter where instead of sliding, Daniels continued for 13 yards and got tackled from behind.  Quinn did not like that.

Is Jayden Daniels the Next RG3? Hope Not

Jayden Daniels hopefully will not go the way of the ‘Running Quarterback’ type, because they do not last long in Washington.  Let us not forget that this was also a problem for former Commanders QB Robert Griffin III. While masterful with read-option plays, he kept coaches on edge for his eagerness to run for maximum yards instead of sliding for safety.  The result? RG3 would eventually suffer a leg injury (ACL, LCL) during the 2013 NFC Wildcard game against the Seattle Seahawks. Oh yeah, he kept trying to play, which made things worse. The result? He was released and replaced by backup Kirk Cousins.

Jayden Daniels: Will he Have No Choice but Run?

One of the many areas over the years that has always been exposed is the Commanders Offensive line. Why? Look at the QB Sack Numbers. Last season, the Commanders‘ O-Line allowed the quarterback to get sacked 65 times. They allowed 48 in the 2022 season, and 43 in 2021.  So when the coaches desire the quarterback to “stay home” and pass, having a healthy O-Line will be necessary to justify Daniels to make that decision. He will need to trust his line and make sure he’s making all the progressions on the field, which takes time.

Again, the offensive line will have to provide that time. And in turn, Daniels will need to be a quick thinker. However, he has received a great deal of praise from staff and fans who have seen him play, which is good. The Jayden Daniels era is a chance to show whether or not aggressive QBs can also be Conservative Pocket Passers at the same time.
