Gomes, a Lille midfielder playing in Ligue 1, France, is currently under careful doctor’s watch at a hospital due to a serious head injury sustained during their last game. The tenacious midfielder was knocked unconscious and required immediate medical attention during Lille’s last match this weekend at the Stade de Reims.
Scary Accident for Lille Player
Lille players, fans, pundits, and even rivals all held their breath and watched on in disbelief as the young midfielder was treated on the pitch for more than 30 minutes. Lille midfielder Angel Gomes collided with an opposing team’s player early in the game. Gomes went for a 50-50 ball with Kone, a Reims midfielder, in the 11th minute of the match, requiring treatment for more than half an hour for the young 23-year-old.
Kone was sent off for the dangerous challenge, resulting in an extended period added to the game. For the lengthy treatment required and the red card, 34 minutes were added to the first half alone. Lille and Reims players had to regroup and get back on the pitch to finish the first half before heading into the dressing room to talk together as a team.
Despite the opposite team being upset that they had to play a man down for the remainder of the match, and Kone arguably wishing that he hadn’t received the booking, both teams were very understanding of how this incident showed that there are much bigger things than football. The Lille head coach, Genesio, knew that the injury to the midfielder was very severe as soon as it happened. He was shocked that the medical team did not rush out to the player as soon as it occurred, as it was clear to everyone at the stadium that the impact, and the aftermath, indicated a serious medical issue.

Lille Midfielder in Hospital
Now, Gomes is in the hospital recovering and getting tests done by professionals who can determine the extent of his injury. He is already communicating and in good spirits, as he talked with his coach and asked if he could play in the game next Saturday. Only time will tell to see if the English midfielder will be able to return to the pitch again this season for the Ligue 1 side.
Gomes joined Lille in 2020 and has made 91 appearances for the club, netting three times for the French team. He has also gone on loan to Boavista in the same year, making 30 appearances for the Portuguese professional team. Before joining Lille, he made five senior appearances for Manchester United, the club where he started his footballing career.
