Liverpool won the opening day of the 2024-2025 Premier League campaign with a slight victory over the newly-promoted Championship team, Ipswich Town. Despite struggling to score, there were some promising performances in the Reds’ squad, including the veteran, Mo Salah. But who stood out among the rest?
Although it wasn’t a ‘great’ team game by any means, with Alto still finding his footing as the manager and determining how to structure the team, there were great moments, exciting plays, and tons of talent out on the field to start the new campaign.
Liverpool Player Ratings
Arguably the player of the match for the Reds was the goal scorer, Mo Salah. Although he had numerous chances where he could have done better, the assist to Jota for the first goal and netting the second goal showed that even when he has an average game, he can lead his team to victory. Another player who stepped up and did what he was asked to do was the youngster, Gravenberch. Even though he is not used to playing the holding midfielder position, he stepped in and did well breaking up tackles, distributing the ball, and linking with his #8 and #10.
And, of course, Alexander-Arnold did well from the fullback position. He needs some more accuracy when it comes to his passing, but it was a promising sign that he was getting into the middle of the field, roaming more out of position, and getting the ball more. He is one of the best passers in the game at the minute, so using him in a more creative role is ideal for Liverpool.
We were a little concerned about Jota multiple times throughout the game, as he seemed distracted by what Ipswich Town was doing to physically push him off the ball. He is being deployed in a more central role this year, which could take some getting used to. However, he scored a goal that came from nowhere, showing just how lethal he can be in and around the box.
One player who didn’t have a great game was Mac Allister. He had glimpses of greatness last year after coming to Liverpool from Brighton, but was all, pretty average after a hefty transfer fee. He had some spectacular goals and passes which showed his quality, but he wasn’t a stand-out player. Let’s hope he can make more of an impact for Liverpool this season.
Lastly, we wished that Andy Robertson did better in his quintessential left-back position. Tsimikas had to step in for much of the season last year due to Roberton’s long-term injury, and it might be something that is holding him back on the opening day this year. He didn’t seem quite as sharp, and he could be lacking fitness, as he didn’t get up and down the pitch as much as he did in past seasons.
Liverpool Up Next
Liverpool plays Brentford next for a home game this upcoming Sunday, hopefully getting another three points on the table and staying in the top three spots on the ladder. Brentfod has yet to play their first game in the league, so Liverpool will have to wait and watch their match to see who to keep an eye on.
