Dani Olmo’s long-awaited return to football club Barcelona is now on the brink of becoming a reality. Despite the club’s financial challenges, they have secured the signing of the 26-year-old Spanish midfielder from RB Leipzig in a deal worth 62 million Euros. This includes 55 million paid upfront and seven million paid based on potential-based add-ons. Despite securing the deal, it is speculated that Barcelona has to race against time to register Olmo for his debut.
La Liga’s Strict Rules & Barcelona’s Financial Crisis
Barcelona’s struggle to register and buy players has been a big concern for 3-4 years now. Even though the Spanish giants are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have one of the highest revenues. Barcelona’s struggles to register their players, including Dani Olmo, stem from issues related to strict financial fair play (FFP) rules. La Liga establish a salary cap on clubs, which is calculated based on the club’s revenue, debts, and expenses the club has spent. The Catalans, in particular, have been targeted the most by these rules. This results from reckless spending and careless management by previous presidents like Josep Maria Baromeu.
The start of all Barcelona’s problems was the spending on players like Philipe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele. The club massively overspent on these players, with 120 million euros for Coutinho from Liverpool and 105 million euros for Dembele from Borussia Dortmund. Not only this, but the club’s salary limit is also a big issue. It is significantly lower than any other top club for example, Real Madrid has a salary limit of 739 million Euros. Barcelona’s much lower makes it very tough for the club to register new players. Despite making sales and reducing the club’s wage bill, the former Spanish champions still don’t meet FFP regulations.
Barcelona Confident in Overcoming Money Hurdle
Dani Olmo’s debut might be on the horizon as Hansi Flick is desperate in his President to somehow make a solution for this, and surprisingly, The Catalans are pretty confident in registering not only Olmo but also Pau Victor, Inigo Martinez, Vitor Roque, and Pablo Torre. The La Liga season starts on Friday, 16th August. Barcelona begin their campaign away to Valencia in the Mestalla Stadium. Although it’s a challenging fixture, Barcelona always hopes to win three points. They need to have their full squad at the helm. Olmo won the Euro championship with Spain and was one of the tournament’s best players. He would certainly bolster Barcelona’s chances of challenging Real Madrid.
The five-time European Champions are confident they will complete the registration process even if it happens the same day as the matchday. How they will manage it in such a short time now is a mystery, as the same scenario happened with Jules Kounde and others. Kounde, who was bought from Sevilla in 2022, faced delays in his registration, too, similar to other signings in recent seasons. Barcelona had to reduce the wage bill and generate additional revenue before registering the signings. Let’s see if they can manage it before the matchday this year!
