Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is poised to join Ipswich Town on loan. The two clubs have reached a preliminary agreement for a season-long loan deal for the England international. While the deal is still being finalized, both parties are optimistic it could be completed by Thursday. Everton had also expressed interest in Kalvin Phillips, but he is now set to move to Portman Road to strengthen Kieran McKenna’s squad as they prepare for their Premier League return. Phillips, who spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham, struggled with form and made only eight league appearances.
He rejoined City this summer and played as a center-back during their preseason tour of the United States. However, he was not selected for the Community Shield match against Manchester United, with manager Pep Guardiola opting for 19-year-old England youth international Nico O’Reilly in midfield instead.

Kalvin Phillips’s tenure at Manchester City has not unfolded as he had hoped following his £45 million ($57.8m) move from Leeds United in 2022. His time at City has been marked by injuries, inconsistent performance, and a troubled relationship with Pep Guardiola. Phillips is now set to join Ipswich Town on loan. Despite spending one and a half seasons with Guardiola’s team, he has only made 31 appearances and contributed just one goal. City had been seeking a permanent transfer for the midfielder to recoup their 2022 investment but have now opted to loan him out again after a disappointing spell with West Ham United last season.
This move is considerably wise as Kalvin Phillips lacks game-time in Manchester City. The squad being star-studded makes it a very difficult task for him to make his space in the starting eleven. Week-in and week-out, his injuries and several other concerns are keeping him out of the contenders to appear and play part in the team.
Financial criteria involved in the process state that the value of Kalvin Phillips has dropped significantly, considering all the facts that keep him out of the Man City squad. This is miserable news for the Cityzens but the fact needs to be accepted. The amount paid by the Blues is much higher than what they’ll get.
What did Pep Guardiola Say
Last week, Pep Guardiola expressed uncertainty about the player’s future while also acknowledging ongoing concerns with his performance. He told reporters, “I’m not sure what will happen with Kalvin’s situation. He was very effective in addressing the issues we faced. I know Kalvin is a strong player when he has the ball and can see the entire pitch.”
To add to this, Guardiola openly accepted the fact and said: “However, he struggles more in tighter spaces. Despite this, he has made a significant effort to adapt to his position and has been confident with the ball, contributing greatly to the team. I’m very pleased with his performance.”
