Baltimore Orioles: Prospect Vance Honeycutt Cracks Top 5 In the Organization

Baltimore Orioles Vance Honeycutt

Baltimore Orioles prospect Vance Honeycutt was the 22nd overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. He played in the outfield for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Honeycutt is 21 and helped the Tar Heels reach the College World Series in the 2024 college baseball season. He bats from the plate’s right side and throws with his right hand. Did Honeycutt get ranked in the Baltimore Orioles prospect pool?

Ranked Fourth In Top 30

The new prospect listing came out on Tuesday night for mlb.com. The Baltimore Orioles have a different-looking prospect ranking. For now, Jackson Holliday, Coby Mayo, and Samuel Basallo are ranked ahead of Vance Honeycutt in the Orioles farm system. All three of those players are ranked in the MLB Top 100 prospects as well. As for Honeycutt, he is the fourth-ranked Baltimore Orioles prospect, but he is not ranked in the MLB Top 100.

Over the years, the Orioles have had a ton of great prospects, but a lot of those prospects have now graduated. Baltimore is one of the best teams in the MLB and this is what years of drafting and developing players look like. It was a surprise to see Honeycutt ranked so high in the Orioles farm system. He is currently in rookie ball with the FCL Orioles. It will be interesting to see how long he will be with the FCL Orioles. Some of the MLB.com scouting reports about him are as follows:

“When the Orioles took Honeycutt with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2024 Draft, he became the tenth first-rounder from the University of North Carolina and quite possibly the most tooled up of all of them. A high school quarterback who won state 2-A titles in football and baseball in 2021 in North Carolina, Honeycutt hit a school-record 25 homers and stole 29 bases as a freshman and turned in another 20-20 performance this past spring (28 homers and steals), leaving the Tar Heels with both the single-season and career (65) home run marks. The Orioles went a bit over slot, giving him $4 million to add his tools to the system.”

Vance Honeycutt is not projected to reach the major leagues until the 2027 season. For the moment, the Orioles have a log jam in the outfield. Anthony Santander, Cedric Mullins, and Colton Cowser are the starters. At some point, Herston Krejstad will be in the majors consistenly. He js with the Norfolk Tides in Triple-A. Another outfield prospect who could reach the majors for the Orioles is Enrique Bradfield Jr. He is currently in Double-A with the Bowie Baysox. It is a credit to Mike Elias and his staff that they have found excellent prospects. Vance Honeycutt has a chance to reach the big leagues, but it remains to be seen what the outfield will look like in 2027 or even sooner.
