UCONN Huskies head coach Dan Hurley has led his basketball program to back-to-back titles this past year in college basketball. It was the first time a team won it all in back-to-back seasons since the Florida Gators in 2005-2006 and in 2006-2007 under Billy Donovan. What was extremely impressive about the Huskies’ run for the last two seasons is that they won all of their NCAA Tournament games by double digits. Could UCONN have a three-peat this year? Also, should Hurley coach Team U.S.A. in the 2028 Olympics?
He Should Coach the Next U.S.A. Team
There was a lot of criticism of head coach Steve Kerr despite winning another gold medal against France in the Paris Olympics. Kerr helped the Golden State Warriors win four NBA championships as head coach. Not only could there be a different coach, but the roster will look a whole lot different. Kevin Durant, Lebron James, and Steph Curry may not be on the roster in 2028. There could be a lot of new faces like Paolo Banchero on the roster.
As for Dan Hurley, he is from Jersey City, New Jersey, and has built a successful basketball program with the Huskies. In his six seasons so far with UCONN, he has a 141-58 record and a .709 winning percentage. Hurley was offered a coaching job in the NBA this offseason with the Los Angeles Lakers, but he declined the offer and decided to stay in Storrs, Connecticut. J.J. Reddick decided to take the Lakers head coaching position and he was in the ESPN broadcast booth last NBA season.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the Huskies program between now and the 2028 season. If they can win another National Title or two before then, there should be no question that Hurley should be the head coach for Team U.S.A. Mark Few, the head coach of the Gonzaga Bulldogs, was on the coaching staff. Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat was also on the coaching staff. In the past, former Duke Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski coached this team.
Two potential stars of the next U.S.A. team could be Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics and Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Jalen Brunson of the New York Knicks could also be on the roster in 2028 when the games are in Los Angeles, California. Dan Hurley is a rising coaching star in the sport of basketball. It was no accident that the Lakers wanted to try and hire him this summer. There could be a day when he gets another call from an NBA team. This is why Dan Hurley should coach Team U.S.A. in 2028 instead of Steve Kerr.
