Kevin Durant Becomes Minority Owner of Paris Saint-Germain

Kevin Durant

NBA star Kevin Durant, also known as KD, left Paris with more than an Olympic gold medal for the USA men’s basketball team. Durant, 35, became a minority owner of Paris Saint-Germain.

On Monday, ClutchPoints posted on X, formerly Twitter, “Kevin Durant is buying a minority ownership stake in Paris Saint-Germain, France’s biggest and most successful soccer club, per Romain Molina.”

Durant’s latest purchase occurred just a day after he spoke to Duane Rankin of AZ Central. Durant told Rankin, “As I get older in the league and the league is getting younger, I tend to think about retirement more.” The Phoenix Suns power forward appears to realize that “father time” with Stephen Curry and LeBron James might not materialize in the 2028 Summer Olympics in LA and makes retirement-related decisions, including this one.

An Overview of Kevin Durant’s Purchase

Team USA, Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant represented Team USA for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, but his latest purchase — a minority ownership stake in Paris Saint-Germain — has drawn global attention. Durant earned his fourth Olympic gold medal in Paris. The NBA star will turn 36 on September 29, which has sparked speculation about whether or not he’ll retire from the NBA shortly.

When in Paris, Durant finalized his purchase of a minority stake in France’s top soccer team, Paris Saint-German, through Boardroom Sports. Durant’s purchase arguably outshined his other purchases in the City of Light. The Texas alum appears to have purchased an investment that could monetize his future retirement.

Kevin Durant’s New Title

With his purchase of a minority ownership stake, Kevin Durant is set to become a minority owner of Paris Saint-Germain. Paris Saint-Germain is one of the favorites to win the UEFA Champions League each year. When he wasn’t playing men’s basketball at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Durant took time out to tour Paris Saint-Germain’s campus and met with team president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. Durant’s purchase and subsequent follow-up appeared to be beneficial, as the investment was in the “single-digit millions.”

Not Kevin Durant’s First Rodeo

Kevin Durant made headlines with his purchase of a minority ownership stake in Paris Saint-Germain, but this wasn’t his first rodeo. Durant, who has a net worth of $300 million, has been a minority owner of the Philadelphia Union of the MLS since June 2020.

Durant isn’t the only NBA player to own part of a European soccer team. The 35-year-old joins LeBron James, who owns a part of Liverpool FC, and Steve Nash, who owns a part of RCD Mallorca. Paris Saint-Germain, who plays in Ligue 1, is the defending champion of the Ligue 1 championship. Paris Saint-Germain has been crowned Ligue 1 champions 12 times. Durant’s choice of team can be described as shocking, but good, as he’s expanding his horizons in the sport of men’s soccer and possibly increasing his chances of earning financial and non-financial perks.
