The dog days of the National Hockey League off-season are here. There are not many NHL rumors regarding players signing except a handful of restricted free agents still out there. However, what is not going away are the rumblings of Trevor Zegras, who is potentially being moved from the Anaheim Ducks.
NHL Rumors: Trevor Zegras Potentially on the Move
Zegras is a bright young star in the NHL with the Ducks. We know what he can do with the puck. However, it seems like his time with Anaheim is winding down. Going back to last season, and even when Pat Verbeek took over as general manager, there was a sense that Zegras would be in Anaheim for only a few seasons.
Zegras’s contract talks dragged into training camp, signing a three-year bridge deal right before the start of the season. The sense around the organization is that Trevor Zegras was not a Pat Verbeek guy. This could be the final year we see Zegras in a Ducks uniform.
Over the last few weeks on NHL Network, Jamie Hersch has been joined by Stu Grimson and Ken Daneyko to discuss the rumors regarding Trevor Zegras and the possibility of him being moved from the Anaheim Ducks.
Last year, Zegras had a tough season, playing in only 31 games and scoring just 15 points due to injuries. However, during his time in the NHL, Trevor Zegras has recorded two seasons of 60-plus points, so the skill is there. However, there is a lot of young talent in Anaheim, with Troy Terry, Mason McTavish, Leo Carlsson, Cutter Gauthier, Olen Zellweger, and Pavel Mintyukov. The question is where Zegras fits in with this group.
“He even touched on it. So is he going to be part of that moving forward?,” Ken Daneyko said on NHL Network after interviewing Zegras. “That’s the interesting question and what intrigues me as well, because you got a lot of parts there. And he would be an interesting piece for a lot of other teams as well with his skill in toe. Some teams that maybe need a player like Trevor Zegras, but all rumors right now.”
NHL Rumors: Possible Fits for Trevor Zegras
With NHL Rumors swirling surrounding Trevro Zegras, the New York Rangers continued to be linked to him. Daneyko was asked about where he thought some good fits for Zegras could be.
“He comes from this area (NJ/NY/CT Area). I mean, maybe the New York Rangers. Possibly is there a fit there?,” Daneyko said. “And how about the Washington Capitals? They added kind of everybody in the last handful of years, and guys that they want to get to another level and show that consistency. Dylan Strome comes to mind. And he worked out pretty well so far in Washington.
Now they went out and got Pierre-Luc Dubois. Is he gonna find a home there with all that promise and talent that he has, we know, but he’s been shuffled around. They’re the type of team that loves reclamation projects. I wouldn’t call this a reclamation project. He’s a heck of a hockey player. But last year was a little topsy turvy from what we heard, and yes, injuries were part of that.”
This does feel like a make-or-break year for Trevor Zegras and the Anaheim Ducks. With two years left on his deal that pays him $5.75 million, it is reasonable for a team looking to take the next step and add an offensive weapon that might not fit in with the Anaheim Ducks anymore.
This is one of the hottest NHL Rumors in the slow days of the offseason. It is a storyline that everyone will continue to watch this season. GM Pat Verbeek must answer these questions, especially as the NHL approaches the trade deadline.
