Warriors’ Jonathan Kuminga Demanding Massive Contract Extension

Jonathan Kuminga

Jonathan Kuminga is seeking a contract extension with the Golden State Warriors of $224 million, as reported by Jake Fischer. The 21-year-old Kuminga is coming off his 3rd NBA season. It was by far his best NBA season, averaging 16.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Jonathan Kuminga will need to take another big step forward this season if the Warriors want to have a chance to make the playoffs. Last year, Golden State failed to make the playoffs. For having a bigger role with the team this upcoming year, Kuminga is looking for a bigger payday.

Jonathan Kuminga Seeking Contract Extension

Jonathan Kuminga was drafted number 7 overall in the 2021 draft by the Golden State Warriors. He signed a 4-year rookie deal worth about $24 million. Going into his final year of the contract, Kuminga wants to have the remaining $6 million turned into restrcutured a max contract. Most likely $224 millon over 4 or 5 years.

The Warriors are expecting big things for Kuminga. The 7th overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft has been improving each season with the Dubs. His minutes and points per game have gone up in each of his first 3 years. Now, the Warriors need him to make another big leap.

Golden State lost shooting guard Klay Thompson in free agency. Jonathan Kuminga is now going to be the 2nd scoring option behind superstar Steph Curry. The Warriors made some key acquisitions in free agency this offseason, but they did not add any bonafide number 2 options. Kuminga wants to be paid like a number two option and not a rookie anymore.

Warriors Betting On Their Youth

It has been a very topsy turvy offseason for the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors failed to make the playoffs for the first time ever with a healthy Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. Veteran players like Klay Thompson and Chris Paul left in free agency. The Warriors signed De’Anthony Melton, Buddy Hield, and Kyle Anderson to help fill that void. While these are solid role players, they cant be expected to get 20 points a game.

What Golden State needs is for young players Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski to turn into big time players. The Warriors were in constant trade rumors for Paul George and Lauri Markkanen but it appears they will stand pat with the players they currently have. This is asking a lot, but it shows confidence in their guys. Steph Curry only has a few years left so the time is now for the Warriors to get back in the thick of things. Time will tell if Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski can make the leap to get the Warriors back in contention.
