José Aldo won that fight, and Chad Mendes showed respect to his opponent. And now he has declared the Brazilian the toughest fighter that he ever faced.
Chad Mendes Respects Aldo
Chad Mendes showed a certain reverence for his former opponent. He never faced an opponent like him, because after that fight, Chad felt pain in his whole body like never before. He saw blood in his urine after the fight, and it showed how powerful José Aldo’s punches and kicks were. “I think that took about 10 years off my life, I always say. That night, when I got back to the hotel, I was pissing blood. I’d never had that happen in any of my fights. I was pretty beat up after that fight,” Mendes recalled.
People still think that Conor McGregor was the toughest opponent ever to fight Chad Mendes, but Chad doesn’t accept that. Mendes has made it clear that Conor McGregor was never the toughest opponent he faced in the Octagon because he explained that José Aldo was a nightmare for him.
“I still tell everybody to this day, that was my toughest fight. Everyone always thinks it’s Conor [McGregor], but it wasn’t. Aldo was next level,” Chad admitted.
Chad Mendes vs. Champions
Chad Mendes fought the great champions of his time, and among those, some were former and some were future champions of their divisions. He faced champs like Conor McGregor, Frankie Edgar, Alexander Volkanovski, and Eddie Alvarez. He faced these champions with great courage and rigorous training, but he admitted that none of them reached the level of José Aldo. For Chad Mendes, no one else is as skilled and powerful as José Aldo.
37-year-old José Aldo has now returned to the UFC after a massive break of two years. While he was away from the UFC, he went into boxing and completely dominated Jonathan Martinez. But now he’s back and is going to fight in UFC 307 against Mario Bautista. “He’s a beast, man. I’m not surprised he came back and completely dominated like that. I didn’t even know he was coming back [for UFC 307]. He doesn’t need to. I think he just has a true love for it. And honestly, I do too; that’s why I keep coming back. But that’s awesome, man. I always like watching Aldo fight.”
