Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitchell Marner will be entering the final year of his contract. Because he is entering the final year of his contract with Toronto, he has been rumored often to be traded to different NHL teams this offseason. According to Spotrac, he will have a cap hit of $10,903,000 this season. Marner is already 27 years old. Which NHL teams could acquire him in a trade?
Anaheim Ducks
The Anaheim Ducks and the Toronto Maple Leafs could make an interesting trade with each other here. Anaheim could swap out Trevor Zegras for Mitchell Marner. Toronto needs a shake-up to the core. The core of Marner, John Tavares, Auston Matthews, and William Nylander have only won one playoff series together. The Maple Leafs have not won the title since 1967. Mitchell Marner last season scored 26 goals and 59 assists. His plus/minus rating was +21.
The Anaheim Ducks could also use a shakeup and Marner would be the best player on Anaheim’s roster. He could use a fresh start in a different city. Some will question Mitch Marner’s defensive play, but a fresh start outside of Toronto would benefit him. The Ducks will have no expectations to compete right away. Anaheim would be able to afford to give him a long-term contract.
Pittsburgh Penguins
The Pittsburgh Penguins could be in play for Mitchell Marner because Kyle Dubas used to be in the Toronto Maple Leafs front office. Pittsburgh would need to trade a player with a hefty contract in this trade. Would a player like Erik Karlsson or Rickard Rakell be traded for Marner? It would be a huge win for the Penguins if they were able to do that. Sidney Crosby also has an expiring contract at the end of the 2024-2025 season. They would need to take care of him first.
Pittsburgh is trying to do everything to win a Stanley Cup Title now in the Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang era. Mitchell Marner and Sidney Crosby on the first line along with Bryan Rust would be fun to watch. Drew O’Connor is projected to be on the first line for the Penguins in 2024. Head coach Mike Sullivan loves speed and skill and that is something Marner brings to the table.
Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings are ready to turn the corner. They just missed the playoffs last season. Detroit signed Patrick Kane last year. Mitchell Marner would be a great addition to this team. This would signal that the rebuild is over for the Red Wings and they need to make the playoffs. Would the Toronto Maple Leafs be willing to make a trade within the division? Mortiz Seider and Lucas Raymond are the future stars of the Red Wings. Mitchell Marner and Dylan Larkin would provide speed problems for other teams.
