The NFL confirmed on Wednesday that the Detroit Lions and New York Giants franchises have each been fined $200,000 after multiple fights broke out between the clubs earlier this week, according to pro football insider Ian Rapoport. The scuffles broke out during a shared practice between the two squads.
“All NFL clubs were reminded in a memo sent last month that fighting and unprofessional conduct at joint practices would not be tolerated,” the league said in a statement on Wednesday.
Incidentally, the Giants and Lions will play in their first preseason game of the summer tonight (Thursday, August 8) at MetLife Stadium. Fans will have the chance to see if the bad blood spills over when the whistle blows to mark the official start of the NFL preseason.
Tempers Flare on the Practice Field
The chatter all over social media from today’s joint practice between the Giants and Lions, aside from the catch by Malik Nabers:

On Monday, there were at least four fights that broke out between the two sides. Lions All-Pro receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown was involved in two of those incidents. Giants quarterback Daniel Jones even got in on the action, as well, rushing to the aid of his center, Greg Van Roten.
Then, during Tuesday’s gathering, another skirmish broke out when Giants rookie WR Malik Nabers and Lions safety Kerby Joseph threw punches at one another. As of press time, no individual players were punished, only the two franchises. However, not everyone came out of the brawls unscathed. Lions defensive back Emmanuel Moseley is out indefinitely after being injured during one of the altercations.
“When you have to stop practice that many times to reset the drill, it’s a waste of everybody’s time,” Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell said following Wednesday’s practice, per The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy. He also stated that the intensity during the week was “too much”.
Lions Look for More in 2024
Shout out to my guy Kyle Brandt for putting respect on the Detroit Lions.
It seems like a majority of NFL media is waiting for this team to fall apart after tasting slight success.

For the Detroit Lions, the 2024 season represents a bit of a crossroads. After capturing the NFC North Division title and advancing to the conference title game, the team still has a lot to prove. Many fans, observers, and critics have speculated on whether or not the team will eventually win a Super Bowl, or fall by the wayside in the ever-changing landscape of the NFL. Meanwhile, the Lions are looking to prove that last season was no fluke.
During training camp, Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell stated his outlook for the upcoming slate. The team’s mantra or motto for the year is, “It takes more”. It is based on a locker room speech that Campbell delivered to the team during their playoff run a year ago.
“We’ve kinda been talking, the motto next year is ‘it takes more,’” tight end Brock Wright stated at the start of training camp. “So, I think everybody will have to step up their game.”
“I think it’s everything. It’s a holistic approach,” he explained. “Starts at the top with Brad (Holmes) and Dan all the way down. Coming here, starting OTAs, it takes more to prepare, and then getting into training camp and the season. Just got to go above and beyond in every aspect, knowing that we got so close last year, but there’s even more that we’ve got to do if we want to win it all this year.”
The Lions (12-5 in 2023) open up their 2024 schedule at home on Sept. 8 against their former quarterback, Matthew Stafford, and his Los Angeles Rams (10-7 a year ago). It will be the first regular season game featured on the NFL’s Sunday Night Football coverage.
