The Carolina Hurricanes made it to the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs once again last season. Carolina defeated the New York Islanders in the first round of the playoffs. In the second round, the Hurricanes lost to the New York Rangers in six games. The Carolina Hurricanes trailed 3-0 in the series and even had a lead in Game 6 against the Rangers before losing that game. It may appear as if Carolina has hit its ceiling. Will they be as good in 2024-2025?
Expect Them to Take a Step Back
The Carolina Hurricanes went all-in at the NHL trade deadline last season. Carolina acquired Jake Guentzel from the Pittsburgh Penguins and Evgeny Kuznetsov from the Washington Capitals. Guentzel was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Kuznetsov left to go back to the KHL. It appeared as if Jake Guentzel was going to be the player to help get the Carolina Hurricanes over the top, but it never happened. He won a Stanley Cup with Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Nashville Predators in 2017.
Carolina has been in the playoffs for the past six seasons. In that span, they have been to the Eastern Conference Finals twice under head coach Rod Brind’Amour. At some point, it feels like a setback for the Carolina Hurricanes is bound to happen. It also feels as if they have reached their championship window and should start all over. People within the Carolina Hurricanes building believe that they can still contend for a title, but they don’t have an elite superstar on the roster to get them over the top.
The Hurricanes finished second in the Metropolitan Division last season behind the New York Rangers. Sebastion Aho played in 78 games last year for Carolina. He scored 36 goals and recorded 53 assists, along with a plus/minus rating of +34. The second-best player on the Carolina Hurricanes last season was Seth Jarvis. In 81 games played, he scored 33 goals and recorded 34 assists, along with a plus/minus rating of +23. It is going to be interesting to see who will be the Hurricanes goalie in 2024-2025. They currently have four goals on the roster: Pyotr Kochetkov, Spencer Martin, Frederik Andersen, and Yaniv Perets.
They have one of the weakest goaltending situations in the NHL. Goaltending is very important in the NHL and it could be the main reason they take a step back. The New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, and the New Jersey Devils all have better goaltending situations in the division alone than the Carolina Hurricanes do. They have high odds to win the Stanley Cup in 2024-2025, but it would be a major risk to bet on them to win it all because they have reached their ceiling.
