US Olympic heartbreaking exit comes at the hands of Morocco

US kicked out of Olympic soccer tournament

The US Olympic soccer team was kicked out of the 2024 Paris Olympic soccer tournament, leaving Americans stunned. In a not-so-surprising turn of events, Morocco sent the USMNT packing, ending their dream of clinching a medal in the soccer category.

US Says Bye Bye To Olympic Soccer Medal

In one of its most significant defeats in the Paris Olympics 2024, America suffered a devastating 4-0 loss to Morocco at the Parc des Princes. Achraf Hakimi, Ilias Akhomach, Mehdi Maouhoub, and Soufiane Rahimi made Morocco proud, kicking the US Olympic men’s soccer team out of the tournament at the quarterfinal stage.

Soufiane Rahimi kicked off Morocco’s goal streak against the Americans in the 29th minute. Rahimi made good use of the penalty he earned off Nathan Harriel’s foul. Hakimi, Maouhoub, and Akhomach kept the ball rolling in the second half. Ilias Akhomach scored the second goal for the Moroccans in the 63rd minute. Achraf Hakimi netted another goal for the Atlas Lions in the 70th minute, with Maouhoub coming off the bench to score a penalty in the 91st.

The match ended with Morocco having 57% possession and the US 43% possession. The Americans made several mistakes that the opposing African nation took advantage of. Sadly, these errors put an end to their dream of taking home a medal in the men’s Olympic soccer tournament. The US soccer team has a lot of work to do before the Land of the Free hosts the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

The US Olympic men’s soccer team had experienced a prior 3-0  defeat from the event’s host at the start of the tournament. However, the Americans switched things up, beating New Zealand 4 to 1 and Guinea 3 to nil.

Since the dawn of modern Olympic soccer, the United States has not won a medal in soccer. They last made it to the quarterfinals in the 2000 Olympics, which were hosted in Sydney. This would be the first time the US had performed in the Olympics since Beijing in 2008. For the first time, Morocco made it to the semi-finals. The African country made history when it emerged from the group stages. Unfortunately, Spain beat Morocco  2 to 1 on August 5.

US Olympic Performance So Far

US sitting on top of the Olympic medal table

The United States of America leads the countries with medals in the Paris Olympics 2024. The US has won 86 medals—24 Gold, 31 Silver, and 31 Bronze. Swimming seems to be the category in which the Americans shine the brightest, with 8 Gold, 13 Silver, and 7 Bronze, for a total of 28 medals.

The second category in which the US Olympic team has dominated is athletics, with 11 medals – 3 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze. Noah Lyles cemented his status as the fastest man in the world in the Men’s 100m competition. The world had high hopes for Sha’carri Richardson to win Gold in the Women’s 100m. However, she came second, winning Silver for the US.

Another category worth mentioning is Artistic Gymnastics. America currently has 10 medals there—3 Gold, 1 Silver, and 6 Bronze. The women’s team has made the United States proud, winning gold. Simone Biles, once again, stunned the world with her outstanding talents in the Women’s All-Around, Vault, and Floor Exercise competitions, winning gold in the former two and silver in the latter.

China and France In The Top 3

The People’s Republic of China has the second-largest number of medals (60), with 22 Gold, 22 Silver, and 16 Bronze. The Chinese have performed well in both the swimming and shooting categories, winning 12 and 10 medals, respectively. Coming in third is host France with 48 medals—13 Gold, 16 Silver, and 19 Bronze. The French have shined exceptionally in the Judo category, with 10 medals—2 Gold, 2 Silver, and 6 Bronze.

Conclusion

Although the USMNT suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Morocco, the US Olympic national team has four years to prepare for the next Olympics hosted in its home. Moreover, the US is still the leading country with the most medals and can add many more to its coffers in the coming days.
