In his most recent bout, Damon ‘ The Leech’ Jackson secured a split decision victory over Alexander Hernandez after three hard-fought rounds in the co-main of UFC Fight Night 240. Unlike his grappling pedigree, Jackson displayed superior striking accuracy, connecting with 85 out of 135 total strikes. Compared to Hernandez, who landed 56 of 119. Regarding significant strikes, Jackson outperformed Hernandez by landing 42 of 85 attempts, giving him a 49% success rate. Hernandez, meanwhile, managed to connect on 32 of his 87 significant strikes, with a 36% success rate.

Hernandez focused much of his attack on Jackson’s head, landing 20 out of 69 significant strikes aimed at that target. Jackson responded with 20 of his 60 significant head strikes landing cleanly. Most of the exchanges occurred at a distance, with 90% of Hernandez’s and 71% of Jackson’s significant strikes occurring from range. Despite Hernandez scoring the sole knockdown of the match, Jackson’s 3 takedowns ultimately earned him the split-decision victory.

Although Damon Jackson felt he comfortably won two of three rounds, he was surprised by the split decision. Expect The Leech to pursue a finish in his next outing.

“It was definitely not a split decision,” Jackson said at the UFC 240 post-fight press conference. “30-27 for either one of us, I would say no, but 29-28 for me all three rounds. I don’t see how it went that way. That’s why you want to finish fights.”

Chepe “Machine Gun” Mariscal battled Morgan Charriere in his last fight. Like Damon Jackson, Mariscal came out on top with a split-decision victory in the main card of UFC Fight Night 240. Mariscal’s output was higher, connecting with 121 of the 199 strikes he threw. Charriere, while less active, managed to land 75 out of 139 strikes.

Mariscal demonstrated solid efficiency with his significant strikes, connecting on 71 of 137 attempts, including 42 strikes aimed at Charriere’s head, which hit the target. Charriere, despite his best efforts, landed just 49 of 104 significant strikes, with 30 of 83 aimed at Mariscal’s head finding their mark.

Most of the fight occurred at the range, where Charriere excelled, landing 91% of his significant strikes from a distance. Mariscal landed at a high clip as well, connecting on 70% of his long-range significant strikes. Mariscal landed an impressive head kick in the second round, essentially winning the fight off damage with that strike alone.

What To Look For In Damon Jackson VS Chepe Mariscal UFC Bout

Given their stylistic differences, it is safe to say these two fighters will attempt to make the fight work to their strength. For Damon Jackson, that means searching for the takedown early on against the younger and less experienced grappler. Jackson is unlikely to want to stretch the fight out with his quote about finishing fights, so it would come as no surprise if ‘The Leech’ attempted numerous submissions.

With whispers of an unfair decision in his last bout, Chepe Mariscal must seek a knockout to put his name on the map in the UFC featherweight division. If a knockout cannot be secured, he will be looking to shadow Jackson’s output with his hands. This matchup draws shades of Damon Jackson’s fight with (now) UFC’s featherweight champion Ilia Topuria, as there is an understanding that three rounds is simply unlikely.
