Leny Yoro, the young Manchester United defender who made an impact as soon as he stepped onto the pitch for the Red Devils, will be out for much longer than initially anticipated. Although he had a very promising start for his new team after coming on as a teenager, he was injured in one of his first matches — and that injury will see him out for the beginning of the 2024-2025 Premier League season.
Yoro Set to Miss Beginning of PL Season
Manchester United have had one of the unluckiest spells in the history of football this past year. It seemed as though every single one of their defenders was injured throughout the year, including Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, and Evans, leaving other players to have to step up and take on the role of center back or outside back for the Mancunian side. Unfortunately for the team, many of those who had to slot into the defending roles had never played in the back line before — or, at least not at this level. Players like Antony and Casemiro had to slot into the defending lineup, which severely hampered United’s profession going forward and their ability to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
So, in the off-season, United made a huge bid to bring in some new promising defenders that would be at the club for years to come. One of the big stars was Leny Yoro, a young and talented backline member who is just 18 years old. He hails from Saint-Maurice, France, and began his footballing career playing for Alfortville and Lille in his home country. After making 46 appearances for Lille and showcasing his incredible defending and passing abilities, Manchester United recruited him for their team. However, he played just a few games before getting injured in the process, leaving United in yet another tough position going into the new year.
It turns out that Leny Yoro’s injury will have him out for at least three months — much longer than United had hoped for or anticipated. He has already undergone surgery to address the issue in his foot to fix the broken metatarsal he suffered during the 2-1 loss to Arsenal a week ago in Los Angeles during their pre-season tour.
Leny Yoro Stats
Unfortunately for United, that is just part of football. And especially when you purchase someone who is not used to the physicality of the Premier League and they are still developing, injuries can happen. Yoro has only played in Ligue 1 and for a short time period, so he may not be used to the fast pace and physical nature of the game yet. Plus, at just 18 years old, he has a long way to go.
However, Manchester United is keen to make Yoro a long-term project for the club. Erik ten Hag is disappointed in the news, but he knows that Yoro will be around for a long time to help the club do better, win trophies, and improve as a squad. In the meantime, while they wait for Yoro to heal, they may set their sights on yet another defender who can come in and bolster their ranks. Matthijs de Ligt, the Bayern Munich defender, could join United along with Yoro to potentially form the new pairing as two center-backs once Yoro recovers from his foot injury.
De Ligt is a 24-year-old Dutch footballer from Leiderdorp who has had an extensive career so far. Standing over 6’0” tall, he is an imposing center-back who has made appearances for the Netherlands national team and multiple clubs in Europe. He began his career at Ajax, where he went on to make 17 appearances for Jong Ajax and 77 appearances for the senior squad between 2016 and 2019. Then, he signed for Juventus and made nearly 90 appearances with the Serie A club over three seasons until 2022. In 2022, he signed for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and has since made 53 appearances for the German club.
