Liverpool has had a fantastic preseason under new manager Arne Slot. Despite solid performances and new players like Curtis Jones and Fabio Carvalho on board, Slot has said Liverpool is far from perfect. The team has a lot of work to do ahead of the 2024-25 Premier League season.
Liverpool recently beat Manchester United 3-0 in a preseason friendly in the United States. Three different scorers netted goals for them. Many players, like Mohamed Salah and Jones, had fantastic matches. This will help build up their confidence. Slot demands even more.
Liverpool Needs to Improve
Arne Slot is a positive-but-realistic coach. He thinks that the Reds can continue to improve before the next season starts. Liverpool will meet Ipswitch Town, which was recently promoted to the Championship side, in its Premier League opener. They hope to post three points from a victory.
Is Slot happy so far? Yes, but he is honest with his feedback on his team’s overall performance. “Yes, I was but not with all of them,” he told The Independent. “We are very happy with the result, we scored some really nice goals … a very positive tour. But I don’t think we had enough control over the game, I think we gave away too many chances. United deserved more than a 3-0 loss but it’s also our quality that we do score our own chances. We will see how players fit into the team. We need to work hard in the upcoming two weeks to be ready.”
Liverpool vs. Manchester United
Liverpool came out with a vengeance against Manchester United, a team that finished lower than expected in the Premier League last season. Injuries and not having a No. 9 striker hurt the Red Lions. The team found itself in trouble. Midfielders like Antony or Casemiro had to play along the backline to cover for injured players like Luke Shaw and Maguire.
But there’s more injury news for them at this time, too. Leny Yoro was injured while playing Liverpool. Rasmus Holjund, their only striker, suffered a hamstring strain that will see him out for at least six weeks.
Man United has to find a new striker to cover, along with developing a backline without Yoro. He came in to help the struggling defensive four. Liverpool saw Manchester United’s weaknesses and took advantage.
Carvalho, Jones, and Kostas Tsimikas all scored goals for Liverpool. Slot realized that his team needed more rotation and substitutions, so he put players in positions usually given to someone else.
Liverpool saw Diogo Jota linking up well with Carvalho, easily tearing apart Casemiro in the midfield and the back line. Salah was fantastic on the wing, showing his speed, tenacity, maturity, and technical ability. He beat Collyer numerous times on the wing and made pinpoint passes to Carvalho and Jones into the box.
Liverpool can now focus on one more preseason game against Sevilla at home ahead of the upcoming season. It will have one week to recover before facing off against Ipswich Town. If it plays like it did against Manchester United, then Liverpool will be the team to beat this year.
