The Home Run Derby has ceased to stop for the heavy-hitting champion, Teoscar Hernández. He leads all of the National League outfielders in home runs. On Friday, Teoscar Hernández launched his 23rd homer of the year against the Oakland Athletics.
With his showing at the plate, he put the Los Angeles Dodgers closer to victory while placing him above many others across Major League Baseball. The 31-year-old has had a stellar season with the Dodgers. His personable disposition in the clubhouse and prowess at the plate has made him a great asset to Los Angeles. The Dodgers began their series with the Athletics on Friday, August 2. In a close game, Hernández was able to help get Los Angeles within one. He went 2-of-4, with a single, home run, and two RBI. The Dodgers went on to fall to Oakland 6-5.
Despite the loss suffered by Los Angeles, Hernández was able to take away some positive notes. With his home run being his 23rd of the season, he climbed higher on the home run list among outfielders in the NL. Players behind him include Jurickson Profar of the San Diego Padres and Bryan Reynolds of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He is 13th overall in the MLB in home runs, just behind Christian Walker from the Arizona Diamondbacks. This is Hernández’s sixth season with 20 or more home runs. The most he has ever collected was in 2021 when he had 32 round-trippers with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Teoscar Hernández 2024 Season
2024 marks the first season Hernández has played for Los Angeles. After playing with the Seattle Mariners the entire 2023 season, he signed a one-year, 23.5 million dollar contract with the Dodgers. During his short stint in Dodger Blue, he has made a lasting impact on the organization.
In July, Hernández is slashing .301/.375/.473. He has garnered a batting average of .267 this season. He has a better approach at the plate this year than in the past. Not only has his walks increased, but the number of pitches per at bat has gone up as well. Between 2021-2023, he averaged around 3.8 pitches seen per plate appearance. Now he averages 4.024 pitches seen. He is top 15 in the MLB with 71 RBI.
His commitment to the team and performance on the field in such a short time has led the organization to recognize his actions. Earlier this week, Hernández was awarded the Dodgers’ 2024 Heart and Hustle Award. Between his performance on the field and his presence in the clubhouse, he has influenced the Dodgers in great ways. Each team awards a player this honor, but the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association will choose one player to take home the overall award once the season ends.
Hernández’s Incredible Career
The Houston Astros first signed Teoscar Hernández in 2011. He made his debut in 2016 for them, only playing in 41 games. He was later signed by the Blue Jays in 2017 where he spent the majority of his career. After an impactful six years in Toronto, his time with them came to a close as he was sent to the Mariners. While with Seattle, Hernández put up impressive numbers. He played in all but two games that year, with an OPS of .741 and 93 RBIs.
Once his contract comes to a close, the Dodgers and fans alike hope that he will make Los Angeles his home for the foreseeable future. Teoscar Hernández and the Dodgers will face the Phillies tonight in a three-game set where they hope to redeem themselves from their previous series with Philadelphia. They look to gain some ground against the fast-approaching Padres in their divisional race.
