The United States’ female athletes are dominating the competition in Paris. From Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky breaking records and making history to Sha’Carri Richardson and Casey Kaufhold bringing home their first Olympic medals, it has been a historic Games for many women. The United States women’s swim team, in particular, has been making quite a splash this year, helping Team USA secure 28 of the country’s current 71 medals. Let’s look at the incredible athletes breaking boundaries in this year’s competition.

Female Athletes Representing Team USA In Gymnastics

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team, most notably Simone Biles, had a superb showing at the Olympics. On Saturday, Biles won a gold medal on the vault, marking her seventh Olympic gold medal. This victory further solidified Biles’ record as the most gold medal wins for any American female gymnast. In total, Biles now has ten Olympic medals: 7 gold, 2 bronze, and 1 silver.

In addition to Biles, many other female gymnasts are breaking boundaries in Paris as well. Per NBC, along with winning a bronze medal during the women’s all-around event on Thursday, American gymnast Suni Lee also collected a bronze medal for her performance on the uneven bars. Lee has now won three Olympic medals during the Paris Games. Additionally, American gymnast Jade Carey won a bronze medal for her performance on the vault on Saturday. Finally, in the women’s team competition, Team USA – which consisted of gymnasts Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, and Hezley Rivera walked away with a gold medal.

Katie Ledecky and U.S. Women’s Swimming

Katie Ledecky is certainly another name making headlines at the Olympics. On Saturday, Ledecky won the 800m freestyle race, scoring her ninth gold medal and fourteenth Olympic medal overall. Ledecky now joins Michael Phelps as the only two swimmers in Olympic history to ever win the same event in four consecutive Olympic Games. Also, in the 800m freestyle, swimmer Paige Madden finished the race in third place, winning bronze for the United States. Per the Olympics, other wins for Team USA’s women’s swimming include:

  • 400m freestyle – Katie Ledecky, bronze medal
  • 4x100m freestyle – Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, Torri Huske, Simone Manuel, Erika Connolly, Abbey Weitzel, silver medal
  • 100m butterfly – Torri Huske, gold medal, and Gretchen Walsh, silver medal
  • 400m individual medley – Katie Grimes, silver medal, and Emma Weyant, bronze medal
  • 100m backstroke – Regan Smith, silver medal, and Katharine Berkoff, bronze medal
  • 1500m freestyle – Katie Ledecky, gold medal
  • 100m freestyle – Torri Huske, silver medal
  • 200m breaststroke – Kate Douglass, gold medal
  • 200m butterfly – Regan Smith, silver medal
  • 4x200m freestyle – Erin Gemmell, Katie Ledecky, Paige Madden, Simone Manuel, Anna Peplowski, Alex Shackell, Claire Weinstein, silver medal
  • 200m backstroke – Regan Smith, silver medal
  • 200m individual medley – Kate Douglass, silver medal
  • 800m freestyle – Katie Ledecky, gold medal, and Paige Madden, bronze medal
  • 4x100m individual medley – Torri Huske, Regan Smith, Gretchen Walsh, Abbey Weitzeil
  • 4×100 medley relay – Regan Smith, Lilly King, Gretchen Walsh, Torri Huske, gold medal

In the 4×100 medley relay on Sunday, Team USA set a new world record for the event, finishing with a time of 3:49.63. In total, the United States swim team, both men’s and women’s, have won 28 medals in the Paris Games: 8 gold, 13 silver, and 7 bronze. Another swimmer making her mark this year along with Ledecky is Torri Huske, who, according to NPR, has won a total of five medals during the Paris Games: 3 gold and 2 silver.

Team USA’s Accomplishments in Track and Field

In track and field, newcomer Sha’Carri Richardson took home a silver medal in the 100m dash final, while fellow American Melissa Jefferson won bronze for Team USA in the 100m final. Also in track and field, on Saturday, American athlete Jasmine Moore became the first woman from the United States to medal in the triple jump (Moore won the bronze medal). In other track and field news, Team USA placed second in the 4×400 mixed relay, bringing home a silver medal for the United States. During the relay, track and field athlete Kaylyn Brown set a new world record for the mixed 4×400 relay.

Other Accomplishments by Female Athletes

The United States women’s rugby team and the women’s soccer team are making history at this year’s Olympics as well. According to ESPN, in women’s rugby, the United States team won a bronze medal, marking the U.S.’s first-ever win in rugby at the Olympics. In women’s soccer, the U.S. team advanced to the semifinals, marking their first chance at a gold medal since the London Games in 2012.

Additionally, Olympian Casey Kaufhold has made her presence known on the archery field, taking home her first Olympic medal. With her victory, Kaufhold became the first American woman to win a medal in archery in over 50 years. Kaufhold won a bronze medal in archery on Friday.

As of Sunday, August 4, the United States has won 71 Olympic medals, the most of any country so far. It’s not even a competition; the next closest competitors are China and France, with 45 and 44 total medals, respectively. A large part of the United States’ success can be attributed to the phenomenal female athletes competing at this year’s Games. It’s safe to say the competition wouldn’t be the same without them.
