Liverpool easily defeated Manchester United today with a resounding 3-0 victory in the United States that saw the third-place Premier League team from last season build their confidence before the upcoming campaign. For the Red Devils, the defeat and lack of goals scored are reasons to be concerned heading into the 2042-2025 season. Arne Slot was happy with his comfortable victory, as the new manager is settling into the team and figuring out their style of play based on their current squad list. He has given other players chances who didn’t get lots of minutes last year, including Curtis Jones in the midfield, Carvalho, and Tsimikas as a left-back replacement for Robertson.
Liverpool vs. Manchester United Analysis
Rasmus Holland, the number nine for the Mancunian side, is going to miss at least six weeks with a hamstring injury in their first US-based game during their pre-season tour. This is a worrying event for the Manchester team that has no real replacement for the striker, who still struggled a little getting used to the speed of the Premier League games last season. The only other option for United is to play Jadon Sancho, a winger and midfielder, as a replacement number 9 to try their best to score goals.
But, he looked lost out on the pitch and didn’t seem to thrive out of his natural position. The only other choice for ten Hag is to potentially put Zirkzee, the new signing, as a striker option to see if he can fill the shoes of the Danish man. On the other hand, Slot felt good about his decisions and his starting lineup, as well as his substitutions. Salah played extremely well for his team, building back his confidence and ability on the ball that he lost at points throughout last season. He created the second goal that Jones scored in front of a crowd of nearly 80,000 fans in Columbia, South Carolina.
Important advantages decided by ‘The Reds’
Some of the other players and plays that stood out in the game included Mason Mount and Rashford in the first half for United. However, it was clear right away that Liverpool was much more clinical than United when it came to going forward and finishing their chances. Carvalho scored in the first ten minutes after getting a fantastic pass from Jota that saw him in behind the back line and coolly slotting a shot in behind Onana. The only real chance that United had to come back and level the score was when Scott McTominay had a chance right after halftime was over, but his shot was easily saved by the substitute goalkeeper for Liverpool.
Overall, Liverpool had nine shots and five on target, whereas United had a whopping 18 shots and eight on target. Despite having more shots on target, they were less threatening chances than Liverpool’s carefully crafted options. Liverpool earned 53% possession, and United had 47% possession throughout the match. Both teams were evenly ranked in terms of passing accuracy, scoring above 83%, and completing more than 450 passes each.
Liverpool FC looking forward
Liverpool face off against Sevilla on August 10th for a friendly before the season starts. Their first match is against the newly promoted Ipswich Town side from the Championship League on August 17th. Let’s see if they can show the new team what the league is all about and if they can hang with the third-place squad from last year. If Liverpool wants to do well this year, they need to work with Slot’s new playing style, focus on individual players’s strengths, and work together as a unit.
