The Atlanta Braves (60-49) are five games back of the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East division as of Friday night. Atlanta is currently on a four-game winning streak after making a comeback and defeating the Miami Marlins last night by a score of 5-3.
Connecting with the baseball has helped the Braves in the last few games whether it is a comeback toward the end of a game or maintaining leads throughout. Pitching for the Atlanta Braves has also come in clutch as teams have not been able to produce many runs against them. According to OptaSTATS on X, Atlanta Braves rookie Pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach has made history in his first three starts. Will he be able to keep it up?
Spencer Schwellenbach Off To Great Start
Many rookies in Major League Baseball struggle on the mound. Pitch control and velocity take getting adjusted to. Atlanta Braves Pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach has not had any issues with striking out opposing batters in his last three starts. He is the only rookie in the Majors to strike out eight or more guys without putting any on the base paths with walks.
Schwellenbach also is the only rookie player with over 25+ strikeouts and no walks in three starts. On Friday night against the Marlins, he pitched in seven innings, only giving up six hits and three runs in their fourth straight victory. One buzzing statistic is that Schwellenbach struck out 10 batters during his outing.
Early on in his career, the Braves starting pitcher has played in 11 games and has struck out more batters (70) than he has given up hits with 57. Schwellenbach currently holds a 4.04 ERA with a WHIP of 1.04. He has a lot more time to pad his stats during his rookie season and young career.
Atlanta Braves Roster Moves
Atlanta has made some interesting roster changes since the trade deadline. One former Braves player, Jorge Soler, has returned to the organization after previously playing with the team in their World Series win back in 2021. He recorded his first hit at Truist Park last night against Miami. Soler has not found his groove yet since he has only played in three games wearing a Braves uniform.
The former 2021 World Series MVP will give a big boost to the team on offense. With veteran players on injured reserve, the move should prove to be productive as Soler is a powerful hitter at the plate. Atlanta Braves fans are missing their speedy baserunner Ronald Acuna Jr, who is out for the rest of the 2024 season with another torn ACL. Second Baseman Ozzie Albies will miss a few more weeks with a fractured wrist injury that he suffered a couple of weeks ago.
Braves Remaining Schedule
The Atlanta Braves will look to continue their four-game series against the Miami Marlins tonight at home. They are currently leading the overall series 2-0. Getting a divisional win against a rival opponent will increase their chances of leading the National League East race. Of course, they will need help, but they are not too far back from the Philadelphia Phillies.
Coming back to win the division will be a huge success for the Atlanta Braves. The baseball squad has to stay on the current path they are on and do all that they can to win games. Pitching and hitting comes within the game, but it is often easier said than done. It is not out of reach for them as the 2024 season continues to push towards the postseason.
