Mike Trout Torn Meniscus Out for the Season

Mike Trout Meniscus Tear

Center fielder Mike Trout plays for the Los Angeles Angels in Major League Baseball. Last Thursday, Trout updated us that he had a meniscus tear in his left knee for the second time in his career.

For this, the Angels’ all-time MVP outfielder is now out for a season, as his general manager, Perry Minasian, told the reporters. Now, the Angels must pick up another center fielder or seek another year contest, as their major fielder, Mike, began a recovery issuance last week.

Mike Trout is Frustrated

Trout is expected to miss the rest of this season, but he has an ample chance to recover for the 2025 season. This is the second time he has torn his meniscus. He has posted a statement on his social media, saying, “Since my initial surgery on May 3rd to repair my meniscus, my rehabilitation has proved longer and more difficult than anticipated.”

“This is equally as heartbreaking and frustrating for me as it is for you, the fans. I understand that I may have disappointed many, but believe me, I will do everything I can to come back even stronger.
I will continue to help my team and teammates from the dugout as we press forward into the second half of the season. Thank you for your  support.”

Though Trout started a minor league game with the Salt Lake Bees, he had to exit the play after one at-bat with inflammation in his left knee. But the point is, he has time to get healthy between now and next spring training. According to the Baseball Prospectus Recovery Database, players who tore their meniscus from 2022–23 missed 67 days, on average.

Mike Trout is believed to be a slam-dunk first-ballot Hall of Famer. Even with his injuries afflicting the past few seasons, Trout is still the active WAR leader with 86.0 for all players and position players.  Career-wise, he has hit 378 home runs and has driven in 954 RBIs. In the last four seasons, he’s hit 76 home runs and has an 11.8 WAR. Reaching 500 runs and a 100 WAR all-time is a bit unlikely, as only 32 players hold this record.

In games this season, Trout hit a slash line of.220/.325/.541. As far as offensive production, he hit 10 home runs and knocked in 14 RBIs. There will be much discussion about how Trout provided the team with significant value after signing a long-term deal. He was well on his way to becoming one of the greatest players of all time. But for now, his enthusiastic fans and others can only wish or pray for his complete recovery, followed by his return to the big leagues next year.
