The offense of the Arizona Diamondbacks had a night to remember on Tuesday at home against the Washington Nationals. Arizona’s offense exploded for 17 runs and 22 hits as they bested the Nationals 17-0. With 22 hits last night, Arizona matched their franchise record. Their offense scored a run in six of eight half innings last night.
Arizona’s offense was led by Third Baseman Eugenio Suarez who had three home runs and five RBI in last night’s dominant performance. Only one Arizona Diamondbacks player did not muster a hit on Tuesday night. Starting Pitcher Ryne Nelson needed no help from his offense last night as he tossed seven scoreless innings and punched out nine. It was truly a great night for both the offense and pitching staff and the Washington Nationals were unfortunately on the receiving end of a dominant performance. Will the Arizona Diamondbacks be able to carry this momentum into their next games?

Arizona(57-51) is in third place in the National League West and only half a game back of the third and final National League Wild Card spot. Arizona’s offense has been strong this season. They are fourth in batting average, 13th in home runs, and second in runs scored. Their offense is led by Second Baseman Ketel Marte who leads the ballclub in every important offensive category. He is 11th in the league in batting average, ninth in home runs, ninth in RBI, and 11th in OPS.
The pitching staff of the Arizona Diamondbacks has been the far weaker part of their team this season. They are 25th in ERA, 29th in strikeouts, and 29th in opposing batting average. The staff is led by Nelson and Brandon Pfaadt. Nelson is tied for the team lead with eight wins. Pfaadt leads the team in ERA and strikeouts. Arizona’s bullpen has also not been good this season as they are bottom 10 in ERA and saves this season.
Diamondbacks Upcoming Schedule
Arizona plays the final game of their three-game series against the Washington Nationals this afternoon. They have a day off on Thursday before visiting the Pittsburgh Pirates for a three-game set beginning on Friday. Arizona and Pittsburgh are separated by only 1.5 games in the wild card standings. This weekend series will impact the NL Wild Card race substantially. The Diamondbacks will have to compete in a competitive National League Wild Card race to get back to the MLB Playoffs. They advanced to the World Series last year but lost to the Texas Rangers in five games.
The Arizona Diamondbacks had an active MLB Trade Deadline as they acquired Relief Pitcher A.J. Puk and Infielder Josh Bell from the Miami Marlins earlier this week. Puk is a veteran the team hopes could stabilize a weak bullpen. He is 4-8 this season with an ERA of 4.11. Bell will fill in for First Baseman Christian Walker who was placed on the 10-Day IL with an oblique injury yesterday. Bell is hitting .239 this season with 14 home runs and 49 RBI. His role once Walker returns is yet to be determined.
If the Arizona Diamondbacks want to have a repeat of last season’s improbable run to the World Series, their pitching staff will need to better. The offense has carried the load for the team this season, but in the home stretch of the regular season, it must become more of a balanced effort.
