Former Seattle Seahawks First Round Pick Announces Retirement

In a surprising move for football fans, former Seattle Seahawks first-round pick Reshad Penny has retired. Before the NFL season and the preseason games, this retirement has come out of nowhere for fans. In the six seasons in the league, Penny rushed for over 1,951 yards and had 13 touchdowns. While this retirement is not surprising due to injuries in the past couple of seasons, it ends off a career of what it could have been. 

The Seattle Seahawks running back situation was messy before the 2018 draft and drafted the former San Diego State Aztecs. While in Seattle, Rashaad Penny Penny was emerging as a breakout running back during his rookie season. While injuries had hampered his momentum.

During the career of the former Seattle Seahawks running back, he had the potential to break out as a great runner, but injuries hamper him. The 2021 season was a breakout year for the Seahawks running back, with 749 rushing yards before getting hurt. Penny’s career after leaving the Seahawks in 2023 was made with the team getting a healthier running back. 

After leaving the Seahawks, Penny tried to have a comeback season with the Eagles. After singing with the Eagles, Rashaad Penny’s injuries returned and made it worse.  After losing playing time with the Eagles, he signed a deal with the Panthers before announcing retirement. 

Rashaad Penny’s career is something to be proud of, with 1,951 career rushing yards, 13 touchdowns, and being a fan favorite in Seattle. Penny was also a first-round pick for a reason with his career with San Diego State. It shows that the NFL can be a grueling place to hone your craft in the end.

The former Seattle Seahawks running back shows that injuries could hurt a lot of long careers for running backs. It also shows that the running back isn’t a valued position it once was. 

Even with the new crop of running backs, it shows them being able to be receivers. The new NFL for running backs is rough, and Rashaad Penny is retiring because it is evolving along with injuries. While the Seattle Seahawks former back didn’t do well, he had two solid seasons in which there could have been more to come.
