Atlanta Braves Trade for 2021 World Series MVP Jorge Soler

Jorge Soler, Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants

The Atlanta Braves have been struggling with the injuries regarding their roster but the team brought back a postseason hero for them back when they won the World Series in 2021 with outfielder Jorge Soler. It was announced that Soler and reliever Luke Jackson were traded to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for minor league prospects.

This is being considered to be more of a salary dump than anything else so the prospects that the San Francisco Giants acquire in this deal. Let’s take a deeper dive into this trade and what this means going forward.

Why did the Atlanta Braves trade for Jorge Soler?

The Atlanta Braves are currently holding the top spot in the NL Wild Card race by 0.5 games and are 8.5 games back of the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East race. However, with the season-ending injury to right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. and guys like Michael Harris II missing considerable time, so getting an outfielder will definitely help the team going forward.

Jorge Soler has been hitting pretty well this year as he has a .749 OPS with 12 home runs, 40 RBIs, 57 runs and a stolen base in 93 games. This is his second stint with the Atlanta Braves as he was traded by the Kansas City Royals at the 2021 Trade Deadline before winning the World Series MVP. This is going to help the lineup continue to be a deeper team for the final two months of the regular season.

The contract for Jorge Soler is the biggest question mark as he signed a three-year, $42 million contract in the most recent offseason. It appears that there is going to be no cash exchanging hands in this deal, meaning the Atlanta Braves are going to be on the hook for the remainder of the contract for both Soler and Luke Jackson.

Jackson has a 2025 team option for $7 million with a buyout of $2 million. Luke Jackson struggled this season as the right-hander has appeared in 36 games and is 4-2 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP in 35.0 innings of work. He needs to do better as he is going to be one of the low-leverage relievers for the Atlanta Braves. The team may have added two players for their roster next season as well during the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline.
