On Saturday afternoon, the New York Yankees went out and made a much-needed trade after losing a close game to the Boston Red Sox on Friday, 8-6. Their offense was non-existent and needed a boost immediately. General Manager Brian Cashman recognized this problem and traded two of their top prospects for Marlins 2B/OF Jazz Chisholm Jr.
The Yankees acquired Chisholm Jr in exchange for Catcher Agustin Ramirez, Infielder Jared Serna, and Infielder/Outfielder Abrahan Ramirez. How will this trade work out for both sides as the regular season winds down?
Breaking Down the Trade
The Marlins got a fantastic package for Chisholm, starting with the Yankees top hitting prospect, Austin Ramirez. This season in AAA he’s slashing .269 with 20 HR’s, 69 RBI, and 18 stolen bases. He is rising up New York’s farm system fast, but there wasn’t a clear path to the majors for Ramirez. Austin Wells is the Yankees franchise catcher, and Ramirez was stuck behind him, and will now have a chance to start immediately in Miami.
Serna and Ramirez are also intriguing players heading over to the Marlins. Serna is a 22-year-old second baseman who provides nice power at the plate, and an all-around good hitter. There isn’t much to see yet with Abrahan Ramirez, as he’s played in the Dominican Summer League for two years. Ramirez isn’t a power guy, as he’s only hit three home runs so far in his minor league career. He has hit well over .300 in each of his three seasons.
The Yankees brought in one of the most electric players in baseball being Jazz Chisholm Jr. New York was in desperate need of a player that provided speed and athleticism, and both are Chisholm’s strong suits. When the trade was first reported, many expected Chisholm to slide into the leadoff spot, because the Yankees have tried multiple different players but nothing has stuck.
Last night against the Red Sox, Aaron Boone put Jazz Chisholm fifth in the order. This isn’t surprising because Jazz is hitting .330 with a 1.002 OPS with RISP. It looks like the Yankees will keep Alex Verdugo at leadoff, with how well he has been swinging the bat.
What Does Jazz Bring to The Yankees?
Jazz brings great things both on and off the field. Last night we saw the impact he provides off the field, and how much the team dynamic is going to change with his arrival. As soon as Chisholm ran through the tunnel, he was smiling and giving off positivity to the rest of the team. A player who can get a team fired up no matter the day is something every team needs.
Chisholm can have an impact like Todd Frazier did with the “thumbs down movement” back in 2017. The Yankees are acquiring players with strong personalities and it looks like it’s paying off. Players and coaches have had only positive things to say about Alex Verdugo and Marcus Stroman, who many had concerns about due to previous clubhouse stories and interactions. These types of players the Yankees usually avoid, but as we’re seeing, guys like Verdugo and Stroman add tremendous value.
Jazz will continue to adapt to the Bronx, and he will be a part of the team for future years to come. New York begins a three-series with the Philadelphia Phillies, the team with the best record in Major League Baseball. This series will provide a great measuring stick for the Yankees.
