Christian Barmore to miss time due to blood clots

Christian Barmore

For football players like Christian Barmore, taking the field is an opportunity. It serves as a chance to showcase the hard work that goes into getting to the highest level of play. However, there is a certain reality, that every time someone puts on the shoulder pads, it may be their last. Any single play or rep can result in a career-ending injury at any given point. Usually, news is slow to develop in terms of the extent of an incident or timetable for a return. But in this particular case, the uncertainty may last a little longer than usual.

Extent of injury concern unknown

The former player for the Alabama Crimson Tide expects to not be available while dealing with a blood clot issue. According to the released team report, he had treatment at Mass General Brigham to deal with the serious concern. Additionally, it was made clear that at this point the focus and emphasis would be on his recovery, rather than being concerned about him returning to play. Considering the nature of such a health issue, it’s difficult, and it would be irresponsible to even guess at a possible time frame. However, the fourth-year pro made it clear that he had every intention to make it back for this New England Patriots team in his Instagram social media post.

This appears at the moment to be a momentary setback for Barmore. The defensive lineman is a competitor and has carved a nice role on defense since being drafted by his current team. Furthermore, after signing an extension earlier in April, more likely than not, the interior force will find a way back onto the field.

Teammate comparison

Everyone’s health circumstances and history are different. Therefore, apples-to-apples comparisons are often fruitless in regard to injuries. There are some similarities, although not identical, that could indicate hope for likely next down for the Philadelphia native. David Andrews missed an entire year with the same condition diagnosis. The former Georgia Bulldog made a full recovery, and continued to snap the ball, pass protect, and block from his center position.

For fans and loved ones, though potentially scary and worrisome, a recent experience from a teammate who is playing now should offer some comfort. Based on the statement, and the words of Barmore himself, there is room for optimism. Luckily the timeliness and response of the medical staff appear to be enough, so unless there’s a setback, it’s likely that he’ll be chasing quarterbacks in Foxboro at some point.

Christian Barmore’s NFL impact

When healthy, he’s become a good piece to bring pressure on opposing offenses. Especially with Matthew Judon lining up with him, it allows the defensive talent to take advantage of more favorable matchups. The 25-year-old coincidentally received the news on his birthday, but until his development, had been worthy of the aforementioned pay increase.

In 2023, he recorded 8.5 sacks and 39 solo tackles. Additionally, he earned one forced fumble and six passes defended. While a setback, when he returns, if the same corps is intact, this remains a young, developing unit that offers promise. It’s unknown if he’ll be able to suit up during this calendar year. However, when he is able to, due to his work ethic, Christian Barmore will likely be a key piece on the interior of one of the better defenses in the league.
