Miami Marlins Place 1B Josh Bell on Outright Waivers

Josh Bell, Miami Marlins

The Miami Marlins have been attempting to sell off pieces throughout the regular season after trading away second baseman Luis Arraez, reliever AJ Puk and center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. already this season. However, Fansided’s Robert Murray is reporting that the team is placing first baseman Josh Bell on outright waivers. This continues to signal that the Miami Marlins are trying to shed salary as much as possible. He signed a two-year, $33 million deal before the 2023 season with the Cleveland Guardians before joining the Miami Marlins via trade last trade deadline.

Bell picked up his $16.5 million player option for this season but if he clears outright waivers, teams will be able to sign him for the league minimum and that is instead of using minor leaguers in a trade with the team. It will be interesting to see which teams attempt to pick up the Miami Marlins first baseman.

The Miami Marlins are moving players left and right ahead of the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline and this will be interesting as there are a few contending teams that are going to be in the market for a first baseman. Josh Bell has been underperforming this season as he has a 92 OPS+ with 14 home runs, 49 RBIs, and a .239 batting average but has been in the lineup almost every game. Do not be surprised to see him getting picked up fairly quickly after the trade deadline.

The New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners and Minnesota Twins are amongst the contenders that could be interested in Bell as they all have question marks at the position. While there are still better options at the first base spot to trade for like Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Yandy Diaz and Paul Goldschmidt who can all be available, getting a veteran first baseman on outright waivers means teams can address other needs during the trade deadline and get their other needs through the trade market.

It could just be a change of scenery needed for Josh Bell as he has hit well in almost every other spot he has been with. Adding the 2022 National League Silver Slugger to a lineup could be a nice addition to the middle of the order for a team with World Series aspirations.
