Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, has more aggressive personalities and high expectations than most people. One thing that has characterized Gambhir over time is his intense disposition, and this only goes hand-in-hand with the high standards he has set for his team. The aggressive coaching function was again seen during the current T20I series between India and Sri Lanka.
Surykmar Yadav’s Mistakes
In the latest T20I match, there was a dramatic scene in which Axar Patel delivered a crucial dismissal, but the team wasted a review for it. On a critical occasion in bowling from Axar Patel, Yadav decided to go for a DRS for an LBW appeal against Sri Lankan batsman Pathum Nissanka on the front foot. The ball, which was an arm ball, was a fuller-length delivery that Nissanka missed while going for a shot for a sweep.
Despite having been given not-out by the on-field umpire, Yadav felt it important to take his time and have a second look, assuming that perhaps the ball would have clipped the stumps.
But in the appeal for a third umpire review, it was proved that the ball was hitting the legs, and so the review was a waste. This resulted in the frowning figure of Gambhir, who was filmed in the dugout, most probably itching to get on the batting line-up. It showed the kind of expectation he has for his team and how disappointed he feels when such expectations are not realized. The match was delayed due to rain and the health conditions of Mendes, which were another reason for the delay in the match. India won the toss and decided to go for the fielding first, and the Lankans lost their opening batsman, Kusal Mendis.
However, the Sri Lankan crease, paired with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera, made a strong fightback plan and stabilized the innings. While Perera stood as the captain of the host team, Nissanka had also risen through the ranks and performed well in earlier games while spearheading the team’s attempts at reorganizing their batting lineup.
Gambhir’s High Standards and Team Dynamics

It would, therefore, be appropriate to correlate Gambhir’s reaction to the review decision with his coaching principles. Famous for his rigorous nature, he regulates and expects the best out of his players, on and off the field. His availability as an influential coach has the potential to overemphasize the team, hence increasing a sense of responsibility to deliver. Gambhir has high standards that are not just the manifestation of his resolve to put discipline into the dressing room but are also part of his plan to cultivate organizational values of excellence. His objective is to make a responsible and accurate team that makes every decision on the ground according to cricket skills and strategies.
Based on this series of events, the Indian team under the coaching of Gambhir will not only escape difficulties but also receive opportunities as the series unfolds. Through the lens of this theoretical framework, delicacy and perfection can be expected to spur and motivate the team, due to his insistence on being crisp and precise. The series against Sri Lanka will be evidence of the buildup of change in the Indian cricket team, and Gambhir’s position as coach will determine the team’s outcome. Cricket fans and lovers will be very interested to see how the team will perform under this new style of coaching.
