The New York Mets continue to bolster their roster as the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline approaches as ESPN’s Jeff Passan is reporting that they have agreed to trade for Jesse Winker of the Washington Nationals. This deal does a lot for the Mets as they continue to get ready for the final few months of the regular season as they currently are holding the third and final NL Wild Card spot.
It is important to note that this trade is still in the medical portion, which can take some time but the deal is agreed upon in principle. This is going to be a great addition for the Mets lineup and the return that the Washington Nationals have gotten in this deal has not been reported as of this writing. Let’s take a deeper dive into what adding Jesse Winker does for the New York Mets this season?
What does Jesse Winker mean for the New York Mets?

For the New York Mets to add Jesse Winker from a divisional rival in the Washington Nationals means they are going for it this season. The Mets have been one of the hottest teams in all of Major League Baseball and have won five of their last six games to get president of baseball operations David Stearns to move prospects and get MLB talent. They have already traded for relievers Phil Maton and Ryne Stanek to improve the bullpen but this is the first piece to be added that is an everyday player.
Jesse Winker has done well with a 128 OPS+ and has 11 home runs, 44 RBIs and 14 stolen bases while being on a contract year, meaning he has a lot to play for. The New York Mets have Brandon Nimmo, Harrison Bader and Jeff McNeil as their current outfield with JD Martinez slotted into the designated hitter spot so this could mean a trade of one of those players as well is on the table. The Mets just got a lot better on both sides of the game as he has been a consistently solid hitter and fielder.
The New York Mets added a hitter who has a career .849 OPS after the All-Star break to really give this lineup a jolt. Expect the Mets to go out and get a starting pitcher and look to lock up one of the NL Wild Card positions.
