The Toronto Blue Jays are beginning to trade away players from their roster and they seemingly have moved on from another player as ESPN’s Jeff Passan is reporting that they are trading catcher Danny Jansen to the Boston Red Sox. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal was the first to report that the two teams were in discussions for a move. Danny Jansen has not played too much this season and has underperformed as he has gone 42-of-198 (.212) with six home runs and 18 RBIs thus far.
As of this writing, it is unclear exactly what the Boston Red Sox are trading away but it appears that today is one of the more active days heading towards the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline. Let’s discuss why the Boston Red Sox would trade for Danny Jansen right now.
Why did the Boston Red Sox trade for Danny Jansen?

The Boston Red Sox have been active in trading for players so far as they already have acquired veteran southpaw pitcher James Paxton, so they want to improve their MLB roster as they push for one of the three AL Wild Card spots. Danny Jansen is more known for his defense as he has committed just three errors in 53 games (49 starts) so far. He has been slightly below average in terms of throwing out runners in his career with 21% caught stealing.
One thing that Danny Jansen has done throughout the season is his blocks above average as he is in the 98th percentile, according to his Baseball Savant page. This is a pure rental as Jansen becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. The Boston Red Sox currently have Connor Wong and Reese McGuire on their 26-man roster so it will be interesting to see if Wong, who has one more option remaining while McGuire does not, will be sent down to Triple-A to make this move.
The Toronto Blue Jays could be making more moves but the Boston Red Sox are looking to strengthen their roster as we head closer to the pennant chase. They are currently just 5.5 games back of the Baltimore Orioles for the AL East lead and have the belief that they can make a run at the division crown.
