David de Gea Finally Linked to 11th-Place Serie A Side

David De Gea

David de Gea is a Spanish goalkeeper who everybody is wondering about in the footballing world. He was (is) one of the best goalkeepers in the entire world, not just for his country or club. His cat-like reflexes, tall frame, long limbs, and passing ability have made him an all-around threat during his time at Manchester United.

It was a huge surprise when United brought in Onana, seemingly to replace David de Gea after years of service. De Gea parted ways with the Reds but has yet to find a club. How is it possible that one of the best shot-stoppers in the game can’t find a place to play? Well, the wait may have finally come to an end for the veteran keeper.

David de Gea is reportedly going to Italy soon to potentially join a Serie A side for their upcoming season. He posts cryptic messages on his Instagram throughout his “off-season”, hinting that he has been waiting for a club to make contact. Now, it seems as though there is potential for the Spaniard to go to either Serie A or the MLS in the United States. However, the term with the most potential to sign the ex-Red Devil is Genoa in Italy.

Ever since leaving United, he has been a free agent, but no club has swooped in to get him. That could be because of his high wage demands or potential disputes between his agent and possible teams for his future.

No matter the reason, David de Gea has been waiting and hoping to light a match under his career yet again and get back to top-flight action. And Genoa seems like the ideal place for him. Genoa needs to add another keeper to the mix since Martinez is now on his way to Inter Milan, a rival team in the same league.  The manager, Gildardino, is positive that David de Gea could be the #1 goalkeeper for his squad to help them finish inside of the top ten spots in the 2024 campaign.

When you look at David de Gea’s career, it is no wonder he is considered one of the best goalkeepers to ever be between the posts. He began his youth career at the infamous Atletico Madrid, where he stayed until he was 21 years old. During that time frame, he made 35 appearances for Atletico Madrid B and 57 appearances for the senior team before he even turned 22.

Then, in 2011, he joined Manchester United. Yes, he was at Manchester United in the Premier League for 12 years, showing his longevity and consistency as the number one for the Mancunian side for more than one decade. He also made 45 appearances for the Spanish senior squad ever since his debut in 2014.

But, de Gea and Manchester United parted ways in 2023. Negotiations over a new contract weren’t reached during talks with his agent and the coaching staff. So, in July, he was left to be a free agent. During the middle of the month, his departure from the club was officially confirmed in a statement. He left United being one of the top all-time appearance-makers for the team.

Now, de Gea needs a stable club to play for in the 2024-2025 campaign. Genoa in Serie A ended in 11th place last season, so they need a stronger defense than last year.  They earned just 49 points in 38 games played, letting in 45 goals throughout every match. If de Gea can strengthen the back line for Genoa, they can let in fewer than 32 goals in the season – something that Juventus and Inter Milan achieved in the same league.
