Jose Mourinho Blast’s UEFA After Fenerbahce’s Narrow Win

The highlight of Jose Mourinho’s first match as Fenerbahce’s manager was characterized by his frustration with UEFA after the team had a close call over the Champions League match against Lugano. However, the Turkish giants narrowly won the match 4-3 against the Swiss side. This was mainly due to the efforts of Edin Dzeko who scored a 21-minute hat-trick to seal the victory off. However, with an edge over the returning fixture, they aim to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Jose Mourinho’s Criticism of UEFA

Jose Mourinho endured a close shave in his first competitive match at the helm of Fenerbahce. But all due to Dzeko’s exceptional effort, the team emerged victorious in the match against Lugano in the Champions League qualifier. The match that was played on a synthetic pitch at Stockholm Arena was quite a difficult affair for the two teams. Post the match, Mourinho took his frustration to UEFA for allowing games to be played on a synthetic pitch. He underscored the challenges of performing well on such surfaces as the ball behaves erratically, with the game tempo being affected. 

We tried not to make excuses before the match, but playing quality football on a synthetic pitch is a challenge. The ball doesn’t move as it should, players struggle to dribble, and the game’s pace slows significantly. I can’t fathom why UEFA permits Champions League matches on synthetic surfaces. 

Jose Mourinho’s criticism also touched on Lugano’s decision to play on synthetic surfaces as inappropriate. In his words;

It’s also perplexing why a good team like Lugano would choose to play on such a pitch. It wasn’t ideal for the game.

Jose Mourinho’s Assessment of the Game

Although it was evident that Dzeko’s outstanding attacking performance gave Fernabace a much-needed boost. However, Jose Mourinho appeared to be worried about the defensive frailties. Fenerbahce conceded three goals in the course of the match making strategic mistakes in set piece and an easy shot which Mourinho noted. Also, Mourinho criticized the behavior of Lugano as Unsportsmanlike as they failed to return the ball as expected in football. In his words;

A seven-goal game is thrilling for the fans, but from a coaching perspective, conceding three goals is problematic. I didn’t like conceding a goal from a set piece, the second goal was an easy shot and the third was not fair play, they should have given us the ball and they didn’t.

In addition, Mourinho was unimpressed with the result, stating he was only able to secure half a triumph. Now, Fenerbahce has the second leg of the tie in Lugano on July 30 at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium. Meanwhile, Mourinho has expressed his desire for the next game, sarcastically hinting at giving Lugano a warm reception.
