Ashok Aswalkar: Man Behind SKY’s Success Amidst Tough Times

Suryakumar Yadav Falls Short Again in PAK vs. IND Crucial Match

Suryakumar Yadav is at the peak of his cricketing career. But who nurtured this young talent? Ashok Aswalkar, his first coach is the driving force behind the Surya. SKY is the world’s best T20I batsman, and was selected as India’s T20I skipper over Hardik Pandya.

Surya, 33, is expected to hang on to this position until the 2026 T20 World Cup, when India hopes to defend their championship on home turf. Between now and then, the sky is the limit for Suryakumar Yadav. He will embark on this next chapter of his career with confidence and, perhaps, success. While SKY is on top of the world, his childhood coach, Ashok Aswalkar, is going through a hard patch.

Ashok Aswalkar’s Emotional Tol

Ashok Aswalkar, Suryakumar Yadav‘s first coach, was fired after 24 years and is now receiving only ₹10,000 per month. The 61-year-old, who worked as a curator and coach at Chembur’s Anushakti Nagar for almost two decades and earned ₹41,000, was ‘humiliated’.

“When they [ASMC] terminated my employment in December 2023, I was earning R26,000 per month for the groundsman position and R15,000 from a coaching firm,” Ashok Aswalkar said Midday. After losing his former employment, Aswalkar turned to instructing at an indoor turn in Chembur. He earned only ₹10K per month, far lower than his previous monthly earnings.

Ashok Aswalkar approached his pupil to express his concerns. “I didn’t even inform my family that I had lost my job. I just messaged Surya to let him know I had lost my job and who was accountable for the damage. Suryakumar Yadav, in response, ceased entertaining that individual,” Aswalkar said.

Aswalkar’s Earnings Continue to Rise

Ashok Aswalkar explained the sequence of events. He revealed that everything started to go wrong when he returned to the office after attending a family celebration. Aswalkar saw strange behavior from his coworkers and those around him right away after returning to work. Following a few back-and-forth talks, the 61-year-old was shown the door.

“After a month, I received a message at home from a few [ASMC] members who wanted to see me on the ground. I met and chatted with Mr. [Ramakant] Sahu and two other committee members,”

“They questioned me and listened intently to what I stated. The committee members promised to contact me soon, but no one has done so as of yet. In December 2023, I received a salary of ₹26,911.” Ashok Aswalkar added. Ramakant Sahu, the head of ASMC, stated that what transpired with Aswalkar was the result of inadequate communication.

Sahu noted that Aswalkar was dissatisfied for a variety of reasons and that if he can overcome them, ASMC is eager to reinstate the senior coach in his previous position. “We’d be pleased to hire him as a coach. He’d been here for years, perhaps decades. We’re trying to persuade him to just stay with us, and he’ll have a full-time curator-cum-coaching post next season, beginning in October.”

“I am currently coaching young people at an indoor turf facility in Chembur. I chatted with Surya about opening a cricket academy, and he responded positively. We both wish to provide coaching to underprivileged children. Money has never been a priority for us, and will not be in the future,” he said. With the next World Cup in India, Ashok Aswalkar believes Surya can show himself on this large platform, a time that perfectly matches the goals he had for big-league cricket 20 years ago.
