Virgil Van Dijk Shows Interest in Extending Contract at Anfield

Van Dijk Admits Stopping Mbappe and France Requires Team Effort | June, 2024

Virgil Van Dijk is one of the best defenders of his generation – and maybe one of the best center-backs of all time. The Dutch CB is a stalwart presence in the back line for Liverpool and his national team, showing time and time again why he is one of the most respected and highly-paid players currently in football at the moment.

His tactical awareness, technical ability to hit long passes, presence in the air to win headers from crosses or corners, and tackling abilities against fast wingers make him a quadruple threat. He is good both on the ball and defending against the opposing team, something that many center-backs struggle with. So, Liverpool fans will be happy to hear that he has shown ‘interest’ in extending his contract for the Reds going forward.

Numerous updates and key insider information have indicated that Virgil Van Dijk is interested in staying at Liverpool for the foreseeable future.

Van Dijk has less than one year remaining on his current contract, something that the Reds will hope to extend moving forward. Not only is he one of their best players, but he personifies everything that the club is — grit, determination, passion, and intensity. However, he has been attracting tons of interest from other teams and leagues, the most notably being from the financially-backed Saudi Pro League that has taken other teammates, like Jordan Henderson.

The captain of the Reds made comments regarding his future at Liverpool after the Netherlands lost the Euros semi-final game against England this past summer, with some fans speculating that it indicated he could be leaving England before the next season began. However, other sources have claimed that the veteran defender told those in charge at Liverpool, including Arne Slot, that he wanted to stay at the club and sign a new deal. The new coach, Slot, has made it clear that van Dijk is a prime target for them to keep for the next few years, despite van Dijk being 33 years old at the time of the re-signing.

Van Dijk is a prolific player, and it is no wonder Liverpool wants to keep him. He won the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, 2019-2020 Premier League, UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award, runner up of the Ballon d’Or, and was selected for the FIFPRO Men’s World 11 three times.

Virgil Van Dijk is a Dutch footballer who began his career at Willem II and Groningen in the Netherlands before signing for the Groningen senior side in 2011 — at just 20 years old. He went on to play here for two seasons, amassing an impressive 62 appearances and scoring seven times as a center-back. He gained attention for his consistency and mature playing style, soon signing for Celtic in 2023. He made 76 appearances and scored nine goals for the Scottish team during his three seasons in the UK.

Next, Southampton came calling. He made 67 appearances and scored four goals for the Premier League side during his time here. His impressive displays for both English and Scottish sides showed Liverpool that he was a player waiting to be discovered. He signed for the Reds in 2018 and never looked back. Since he signed for Liverpool, he has made nearly 200 appearances and scored 18 goals during his time in England.

Will Liverpool extend van Dijk’s contract or give him a new one? Only time will tell. Although he is ‘past his prime’, the stats and numbers show differently.
