So the decision has finally been made. Suryakumar Yadav, the dynamic batsman has been named captain of team India’s ODI outfit. After much speculation where names like Hardik Pandya were thrown around the Indian selectors have made their final call. It is an interesting choice but not one that is entirely out of the ordinary.
India is a team in transition. The retirement of the stalwarts Rohit Sharam, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja means this is a new-look side that we will be seeing in the future. So to lead, a good leader is required. It seems the Indian selection deems Suryakumar Yadav to be the right man for the job. But is he though?
Why Suryakumar Yadav is the Captain?
Suryakumar Yadav is one of the most explosive batsmen in world cricket who successfully captained the Indian T20 outfit in the five-match series at home against Australia. Coming on the back of the disappointing World Cup final loss to arch-rivals Australia, the T20 series at home was a chance for the Indian selectors to test the waters with the next crop of players who would replace the big guns who were nearing the end of their career.
And it was a success. An Indian team lacking the services of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya, developed outclassed the Australians 4-1. Captain Suryakumar Yadav marshaled his troops well to a much-needed morale-boosting win over the Aussies. So in addition to his talents as a batter, Yadav showcased his abilities as a leader, which the Indian selectors no doubt took into consideration.
What Happens to Hardik Pandya in the T20 Side?
It is going to be interesting to watch a player as dynamic as Hardik Panday, a talented all-rounder and a leader in his own right fit inside a team where he is not the captain, considering that Rohit Sharam is not a part of the playing 11. The issues the Mumbai Indians faced in this season of IPL, with Panday as captain, with Rohit also in the lineup, and the troubles the team faced might be in the back of the player’s mind. However, the redemption at the World T20 final, when Pandya bowled the final over that brought India the victory will bode well.
Since Hardik Pandya is not part of the ODI lineup and Suryakumar Yadav is not part of the ODI team it will be interesting to see how these players work together. One thing is for sure, this Indian T20 side packs a lot of power and the opposition better watch out, as there could be some big scores on the cards. The main question that pundits will ask is: is this a long-term bet as far as India’s T20 side is concerned?
Suryakumar Yadav the Permanent T20 Captain?
Now that Rohit Sharma has retired questions will be asked: who will lead India in T20 going forward? Considering that Sri Lanka is not the strongest side around, this tour will likely be a test of the team’s mental, and the captain’s ability to lead in different conditions. Suryakumar Yadav if he can deliver, not only in terms of runs but as an effective captain on the field, then this may be the start of something permanent for him with team India.
