England recalled fast bowler Mark Wood to its team for the second Test against the West Indies, which begins Thursday in Nottingham. Wood replaces star pacer James Anderson, who retired from international cricket following England’s stunning victory over the West Indies by an innings and 114 runs at Lord’s.
Mark Wood’s previous Test appearance was against India in Dharamshala in March. He did not play the first Test at Lord’s because he had just returned from England and will compete in the Caribbean T20 World Cup in 2024. He did not, however, play England’s remaining two matches. It included a 68-run semifinal loss to India.
Anderson’s Retirement and Mark Wood’s Return
Mark Wood replaces James Anderson in the 14-man squad, who announced his retirement from international cricket after England’s innings triumph at Lord’s. England currently leads the three-match Test series against the West Indies 1-0.
Mark played three of India’s five Tests earlier this year. He was also a member of England’s T20 World Cup squad, appearing in five games. Mark Wood, 34, has played 34 Tests for England. He captured 108 wickets along the way. His most recent Test appearance came in March, against India.
The second Test will begin on Thursday, and the third and final Test of the series will be placed in Birmingham on July 26. Previously, England had just revealed the team for the first Test, leaving out numerous senior players, including Mark Wood, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes, and Jack Leach. Mark Wood played in England’s T20 World Cup semi-final last month. He had a disappointing performance, taking only three wickets in five matches, all against Oman.
“Rest is probably not the best word, but we’ll try to make him available for selection in the second and third Tests, hopefully.” England’s other seam bowling possibilities in the Test squad are Matthew Potts and uncapped Dillon Pennington.
With James Anderson retiring from the first Test against the West Indies at Lord’s, England has recruited pacer Work Wood to the squad for the second Test, which begins on July 18 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

At Lord’s, England granted Gus Atkinson his first Test cap, and the Surrey quick claimed 12 for 106, the fourth-best match stats by a Test rookie in history. Matthew Potts and uncapped Dillon Pennington are the other seam-bowling options on the roster. Gus Atkinson, a 26-year-old Surrey bowler, debuted in the Lord’s Test and took 12 wickets, seven in the first innings and five in the second.
England’s win at Lord’s was only their fourth in this cycle of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25, and they now have 33 points and a 25% points percentage. They are in the bottom half of the standings, along with South Africa and Bangladesh in terms of points percentage.
Gus Atkinson made his Test debut for England at Lord’s, bowling 12-106 – the fourth-best match numbers by a debutant bowler in Test cricket history. “After finishing T20 cricket, you’ll soon advance to Test cricket, where you can’t just throw someone into a match without any prior experience.” When the squad was announced, England Men’s Managing Director Rob Key commented.
