Dodgers Suffer 2 Walk Off Losses to Tigers

The Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers finished up a three-game series in Detroit on Sunday afternoon which saw the Tigers walk off the Dodgers. It was the second Tigers walk-off win that series and also the second one in a row, with the first walk-off happening Saturday night in extra innings. The Dodgers took the first game of the series on Friday night but the Tigers were able to bounce back and take the next two.

Friday, July 12 saw the NL West-leading Dodgers head to Comerica Park to face the fourth-place AL Central Tigers. The Tigers struck first when Malloy and Vierling were able to get on base in the first innings thanks to a single to left and a walk respectively with Greene following up with a two RBI double. Detroit would get a third run in the second inning when Vilade who got on base via a walk was brought home on a triple from Malloy.

The Dodgers would start their comeback in the fourth inning with a Freeman solo homer off Skubal. Teoscar Hernandez would draw a walk and then score from second off a single to right from Pages. Los Angeles would then tie the game in the eighth inning thanks to a single from Hernandez which brought in Will Smith and would then take the lead in the ninth on a ground rule double from Ohtani.

Dodgers’ closer Daniel Hudson would give up two walks but also get two strikeouts and close the door, securing the win.

Detroit Walks Off LA 11-9

Game two saw Montero go against Wrobleski on the mound with both of them pitching less than stellar games. Montero gave up five earned over fine innings whereas Wrobleski gave up four runs with three of them earned over five innings. On Saturday, the Dodgers struck first with a Freddie Freeman groundout which scored Ohtani in the first inning.

Detroit struck back in the bottom of the second on a double from Rookie Colt Keith which scored both Greene and Canha, making it 2-1 Detroit. LA would tie it up in the third off a bases-loaded walk which saw Taylor take first and Barnes score. LA would take the lead with Ohtani’s solo homer in the fifth, with a single by Gavin Lux later in the inning which scored Freeman and Pages making it five-two Dodgers.

In the bottom half of the fifth, the Tigers would make it 5-4 off two solo homers from Vilade and Ibanez. In the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, the Dodgers would score four more runs thanks to the efforts of Ohtani, Hernandez, and Freeman. Detroit’s offense would answer back in the bottom of the ninth when Vierling doubled bringing in Malloy and Perez, making it nine-six Dodgers.

Greene and Rogers were both outs and with two outs Carson Kelly would hit a single bringing in Vierling from third making it nine-seven Dodgers. In the next at-bat, Colt Keith would hit a two-run home run tying the game up at nine-nine. After the Dodgers failed to score in the top of the tenth, the Tigers would win the game off a two-run homer thanks to Gio Urshela.

Tigers Win Via Walk Off 4-3

Sunday saw the Dodgers score early in the first inning when Teoscar Hernandez doubled to bring in Will Smith, with a single from Andy Pages bringing home Hernandez. Miguel Rojas would reach on a single and due to a throwing error, Pages would reach third. Rojas would then get caught in a rundown trying to steal second but Pages would score before he could be tagged out making it three-zero Dodgers.

In the bottom of the fourth, Urshela would score Colt Keith from third thanks to a sacrifice fly putting the Tigers on the board. In the sixth, McKinstry would bring home Greene by hitting into a fielder’s choice which saw Kelly out at second base. McKinstry would hit a leadoff triple in the ninth inning and would then be brought home by Malloy in the next at-bat tying the game up three-three.

Ryan Vilade would bunt and reach first on a fielding error by Dodgers pitcher Yohan Ramirez which moved Malloy to second. Wencel Perez would also bunt in the next at-bat which would see Ramirez charged with a throwing error to third base and bring home Malloy winning the Tigers the game four-three.

All-Star Break And Looking Ahead 

The Dodgers and Tigers are currently enjoying some time off via the All-Star break with both teams resuming play Friday, July 19. The Dodgers head home and will face the Red Sox in a three-game series and then face their NL West rivals the Giants in four games at home.

The Tigers meanwhile will head to Canada where they’ll face the Blue Jays for three games and then fly to Cleveland where they’ll face their AL Central rivals the Guardians in four games.
