Atlanta Braves Starting Pitcher Reynaldo Lopez Spectacular In 2024

Atlanta Braves

Atlanta Braves Starting Pitcher Reynaldo Lopez continues to take Major League Baseball by storm in 2024. He had another masterful outing on Sunday afternoon at home against the Philadelphia Phillies. Lopez tossed six scoreless innings while punching out six against the team with the league’s best record. A few hours after another great start, Lopez got the opportunity to do something for the first time in his nine-year career. He was named to the  National League all-star team.

Lopez has been consistently excellent this year with an ERA below two in each month this season. He is 7-2 this season with a league-leading ERA of 1.71. Lopez is only 26th in the league in wins due to a lack of run support in various starts this season. For example, Lopez walked away with a no decision on April 6 against the Washington Nationals. He surrendered two earned runs over six innings of work, but the offense of the Atlanta Braves scored all five of their runs after Lopez was removed from the game.

Will Lopez be able to continue being just as impactful in the second half of the regular season?

Reynaldo Lopez Career Summary

Lopez made his MLB debut in 2016 as a member of the Washington Nationals. He has also had stints with the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, and Cleveland Guardians. This is his first season with the Atlanta Braves. This has been by far the best year of Lopez’s MLB and that is reflected by the 30-year-old being named to his first MLB All-Star team less than 24 hours ago.

Lopez has a career record of 46-51 with an ERA of 4.01.

The Atlanta Braves(49-39) currently occupy the top National League Wild Card spot. Their offense has been average this season. They are 18th in batting average, 12th in home runs, and 18th in runs scored. Atlanta’s offense is paced by Designated Hitter Marcell Ozuna. He is top 20 in the league in batting average, home runs, RBI, and OPS.

Atlanta’s pitching has been the far stronger part of their team this season. They are second in ERA, sixth in strikeouts, eighth in opposing batting average, and seventh in WHIP. The Braves pitching staff is full of players at the top of the statistical leaderboards. Starting Pitcher Chris Sale is tied for the league lead in wins and top 10 in ERA, strikeouts, and WHIP. Closer Raisel Iglesias is sixth in the league with 21 saves and Relief Pitcher Joe Jimenez is ninth with 17 holds.

When Will Lopez Take The Mound Next?

The final start of the first half of the season for Reynaldo Lopez will be on Friday, July 12, on the road against the San Diego Padres. Lopez faced San Diego on May 20 and acquitted himself well. He surrendered two earned runs over 6.1 innings. He walked away with a no decision as the Atlanta Braves lost 6-5. Atlanta’s bullpen surrendered four earned runs over 2.2 innings.

The Atlanta Braves have a seven-game road trip to finish out the first half of the regular season. They begin a four-game series tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks and a three-game set with the Padres begins on Friday. Lopez will look to have one more solid start before presumably facing the American League at Globe Life Field in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game.
