Charlotte Hornets vs. Team China Summer League Preview | July 7, 2024

Charlotte Hornets vs. Chinese national basketball team summer league California classic

In the third game of the day, we’ll see the Charlotte Hornets vs. the Chinese national basketball team. Both of these teams had very different first outcomes on Summer League day one.

The Hornets took on the San Antonio Spurs and absolutely crushed them 97-65. Mouhamadou Gueye was the main man of the day, scoring 21 points, having three blocks, and two steals. Center Jake Stephens came off the bench with 14 points and eight rebounds. Lastly, Zavier Simpson contributed 10 points, eight assists, and five rebounds.

The Chinese national basketball team couldn’t handle the Sacramento Kings 1 as they lost 50-101. The only bright spot was Cheng Shuaipeng, who scored 16 points. Following him was seven-footer Yang Hansen, who contributed eight points, three rebounds, and two assists. No other player on the team scored over five points, which led to the tough loss in their first California Classic game.

Summer League Team Review

This Hornets Summer League was clearly ready to rumble yesterday, and one should expect the same to happen today. It was very difficult for the opposition’s defense to contain these guards as they easily slashed their way into the paint. Every single player on the team had a point in their last game as they moved the ball well and looked for the best shot.

Since this isn’t the big league, one can expect changes to be made to the starting lineup. One player who might show up soon is Jake Stephens, who had a very good performance in the last game. Expect Charlotte to score the first point of the game. However, playing in the paint may be more difficult due to China’s big man, Hansen.

A lot needs to be done for the Chinese national basketball team to make a dent in their poor performance. It starts with the starting five. They combined for just 10 of the 50 points had that game. Even worse, there was only one assist made between the five players, which is probably why they struggled to score. Flowers must be given to the swarming Hornet’s defense that shut down this entire lineup.

Shuaipeng was the only player on this team who knew what to do with the basketball. Even then, his only other stat was a rebound. If they don’t get it together soon, it will be another massive loss, as Charlotte is clearly looking to make a statement and will most likely do so again in this next California Classic game.

Possible Breakout Players of the Game

Charlotte Hornets

One player to expect more from this next game is Bryce McGowens. He’s already played in the NBA for two seasons with the Charlotte Hornets. Last season, he averaged 5.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, and .9 assists per game. McGowens had six points in his Cali Classic debut, which matches up to his average. However, more should come out of him in the next game. He’s played against big-time NBA players now, and it’s time to get to work. I can see him having at least a 10-point night tonight, but possibly more.

Team China

All eyes should be on center Yang Hansen. He’s been talked about as a possible NBA prospect, but that wasn’t seen on display yesterday. It would be shocking for him to have another eight-point game. One stat that absolutely needs to be higher is his rebounds. I can see Hansen having five-plus rebounds this game and at least 15 points. If not, then chances are China’s team won’t be making much movement in the scoring column.
