Alex De Minaur has had a breakout year in 2024, climbing to a career-high 9th ATP ranking in February. He dropped out of the top 10 later but after dazzling performances in the French Open where he reached the quarterfinals and the Libema Open which he won, he regained his 9th spot, entering Wimbledon for the first time in his career as a top 10 seed.
The Australian was paired with his fellow countryman, James Duckworth, in the Wimbledon Championships first round. De Minaur needed three successive tiebreaks to overcome Duckworth. He had a dominant first serve, scoring 81% of his first serve points, 16 of them from aces. The world No. 9 then qualified to face Jaume Munar in the second round.
Alex De Minaur Through To Wimbledon 3rd Round
Alex De Minaur is one of four Australian men left in the competition after two rounds. He started the second round against Jaume Munar more dominantly than he did against James Duckworth. The Wimbledon second-round clash was the sixth meeting between the two with the Australian winning two of the previous five.
Alex De Minaur had a less-than-dominant first serve in the first set but had it smooth sailing with Munar being underwhelming. He took a quick lead in the first set and kept up the pace to win the first set 6-2.
The second set started as dominantly as the first, with a quick 3-1 lead. De Minaur went on to win the set 6-2. De Minaur is known for his speed and his ability to win points with his change of pace from his ferocious forehand. The Aussie used this to dominate his Spanish opponent.
Alex De Minaur raced to a 4-1 lead in the third set, keeping up with the first two sets. De Minaur was on ruthless form, looking to wrap up their second consecutive Grand Slam clash in quick fashion. De Minaur had breezed past the Spaniard in the same stage of the French Open 7-5, 6-1, 6-4.
At 5-3 and a game away from the Wimbledon third round, Munar came alive. He saved three match points and with nine points in a row, dragged the set to 5-5. Alex De Minaur, known as “the Demon”, didn’t let up. He came right back, winning the next two games to book his spot in the third round.
Alex De Minaur’s Breakout 2024 So Far
Alex De Minaur has been in fine form since the grass-court season began, barring his early exit from the Queen’s Club Championships in the middle of June. After losing to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of the French Open at the beginning of June, the Australian went on a four-match winning streak to win the Libema Open.
De Minaur didn’t drop a single set all through the tournament, only needing a tiebreak once to overcome Ugo Humbert. Alex De Minaur’s victory over Jaume Munar has lifted him to 6th on the Race to Turin rankings, putting the Australian in an excellent position to make it to the ATP Finals in November for the first time in his career.
The Australian has garnered 2,605 live points in 2024. He reached the final of the Rotterdam Open in February but lost to Jannik Sinner. He then won the Mexican Open later that month. He also got to the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters and the French Open, losing to Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev respectively.
The fourth round is the farthest Alex De Minaur has gone in the Wimbledon Championships. The Australian would be looking to at least, equal that personal record, and at best, make it to the quarterfinal.
Very happy to get the win today, never easy to get the win in these conditions. Very happy to get to the third round and very happy the sun is out in London… This is always a surface I’ve enjoyed… I look forward to it every year. I always enjoy this tournament and hopefully I can go deep.
