In their first game of Summer League action, fans will get to see the San Antonio Spurs vs. Charlotte Hornets in the California Classic Sacramento edition.
Unfortunately, sophomore player Victor Wembanyama won’t be playing for the Spurs this summer as he is busy blazing a path in the Olympic Qualifiers with Team France. However, the team has signed a good number of Summer League contracts to give some undrafted players the chance to shine. Keep an eye on these guys, as they’ll be the most hungry players on the court.
The Charlotte Hornets have a similar roster build this year, consisting of a decent number of rookies who signed on for the summer. However, they also reached out to some older players like five-year Matt Morgan, who currently plays in the British Basketball League for the London Lions.
This should be an interesting game to watch as both teams fight for the first win of the season.

No Wemby, no problem. The Spurs have gotten themselves some impressive names to fill their roster this summer. The first mention is rookie Stephon Castle, who was drafted fourth overall in the 2024 NBA draft. The UConn guard will most likely be a key running mate for Wemby during the regular season. Also, eyes should fall on rookie Riley Mixin, who went undrafted. This young player was a fantastic freshman for the Morehead State Eagles and could end up getting a real deal after this summer.
Lastly, the Spurs have placed two-year guard Jamaree Bouyea on their roster for the Summer League. Bouyea has had some struggles in the NBA so far. He’s been bounced around four teams in two seasons and has yet to find his footing. After another tough season in San Antonio, it’s no surprise he’s on the roster. This could be Bouyea’s chance to sink or swim.

Fans of the Hornets will get to see one of their top players this summer in Brandon Miller. However, he will not be competing in the California Classic. Miller will only be on the roster for the Las Vegas stretch. Fans can still be excited to see their sixth overall pick, Tidjane Salaun, one of many French players entering the league. The 18-year-old recently played internationally for Cholet Basket and averaged 9.0 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game, and 1.0 assists per game. Maybe he’ll be the answer to all of Charlotte’s problems.
Lastly, as mentioned above, the Hornets are giving Matt Morgan of the London Lions an opportunity in the Summer League. Morgan is playing some great ball in the UK, with an average of 19.1 points per game. It will be interesting to see if he gets himself an NBA or G-League contract.
Possible Breakout Players of the Game
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs roster has some great talent, but one player who could have a great summer is Jameer Nelson Jr. of Texas Christian University. Nelson Jr. played for two teams before making his way to TCU. The guard had 11.2 points per game, 2.6 rebounds per game, and 3.3 assists per game. The rookie was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and also played well during March Madness 2024.
Charlotte Hornets
Looking through this roster, fans should watch Drew Pember as the Summer League transpires. Pember played for the University of North Carolina Asheville. The forward had a blazing-hot 2023-24 season, averaging 20.6 points per game, 8.2 rebounds per game, and 3.5 assists per game. It would not be a shock if Pember did well this summer and landed himself an NBA contract.
