As a basketball fan, you should know Klay Thompson agreed to a three-year, $50 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks earlier this week. As a result, Thompson is no longer a member of the Golden State Warriors. Thompson should be able to bounce back in Dallas, Texas, after a 2023-24 NBA season with a slow start that was later improved.
If you’re a Warriors fan, you’re already aware Draymond Green is an outspoken NBA player. Green has said (and did) many controversial things in the past, such as his exchanging of “too small” taunts with Jusuf Nurkic. Green has recently spoken up after the Thompson trade, which might shock you.
Here are Green’s shocking statements after the Thompson trade.
Draymond Green almost Left the Warriors Last Season
However, Green ultimately didn’t play with Memphis since he signed a four-year, $100 million contract with Golden State in June 2023. Green suffered from a tumultuous season last year due to multiple suspensions for physical altercations with other NBA players.
Draymond Green didn’t Convince Klay Thompson to Stay
Draymond Green said he didn’t try to convince Klay Thompson to stay with the Golden State Warriors, according to Sports Illustrated. Green and Thompson were teammates for 12 seasons and won four NBA championships. Both players were a part of the Warriors’ dynasty. So, of course, Warriors fans will find it tough to see Thompson in any jersey other than a Golden State one.
But there’s more to the story, as Green recently said on his podcast, The Draymond Green Show, that as Thompson was making his decision, he didn’t try to interfere.
Green said, “I was headed to my daughter’s recital. So I wasn’t able to go as in-depth to the conversation as maybe I would have … When Klay told me I was just able to listen. And it wasn’t like a, ‘Yo we should finish like this,’ or a, ‘You should rethink this,’ it was just like a, ‘Wow, yeah, alright, like, congrats, bro, I’m happy for you.'”
“I didn’t even attempt to want to talk him out of leaving … To see him struggle the way he did last year … I’d hope the care that you would have for that person would go far beyond what you may feel is best for you or what you want to see.”
Hopefully, Thompson can make more of a difference as the Mavericks try to return to the NBA Finals next year.
Draymond Green doesn’t Relate to the Splash Brothers
Draymond Green doesn’t relate to the Splash Brothers duo of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.
Green said in a YouTube video, “I don’t put myself in the same category with them two. Them two, for me, are like here, out of the frame, they’re here. I think for me personally, the way I viewed my role in this is always like, ‘I’m always going to have them two’s back, I’m always going to look out for them two.’ No matter what, nobody can touch them two. They can do no wrong and I’ll go to battle for them, I’ll take the fall for them, whatever that needs to be. I’m doing that.”
Green’s thoughts might not be what you thought they’d be, but at least he shared his opinion on this arguable topic without making things about him.
