The Memphis Grizzlies selected center Zach Edey from Purdue University with the 9th overall pick in the NBA Draft. Edey was considered one of the best big men in college basketball last season. He was high on the Grizzlies draft board, so they were pleased to see him available at pick nine.
Who is Zack Edey?
Edey, from Toronto, Canada, did not play basketball until his sophomore year in high school. He showed enough promise to transfer to IMG Academy to finish out his high school career. He opted to go to Purdue University in 2020 as a three-star recruit.
Edey was an immediate sensation at Purdue and was named to the 2021 Big Ten All-Freshman Team. He averaged over 20 points and 10 rebounds in his junior and senior seasons. For his efforts, he was named back-back National Player of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year.
Outlook for Edey

Edey was a dominant player in college. He was a proficient rebounder and had a solid touch around the rim. His large frame made moving on defense difficult, and he was an adept free-throw shooter. Due to his relative inexperience in the game, it is anticipated that the best is yet to come from the young center.
Even though true centers are a dying breed in the NBA, Zach displays skills that should pave the way for a long career in the league. His shot-blocking ability reminds experts of Steven Adams. And with his staunch defense, he could have a successful career like Walker Kessler.
The future looks bright indeed for Mr. Edey.
