According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Golden State Warriors are prepared to offer Paul George a four-year max deal. George has a player option left before becoming an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
The Warriors are desperately looking to bring in another star to play alongside Steph Curry. George may be the perfect fit to go alongside him. Paul George has been a Clipper since 2019. Due to injuries and other things, the Clippers have not gotten over the hump in the playoffs since acquiring George. It may be time for both parties to move on. This could mean that the Warriors have a decent shot to land George.
NBA free agency is right around the corner and things will start heating up. Golden State is poised to take some big swings as they try to bounce back from a disappointing season. Will it end with them landing George this NBA Offseason?
What Paul George Brings To Warriors
Paul George has been one of the premier two-way players in the NBA over the last decade. Racking up all-star appearances and All-NBA teams, the biggest issue for the 34-year-old George has been staying on the court consistently. He has been hampered by injuries. When he has been able to stay healthy, he is an All-NBA caliber player.
He should fit in great with the Warriors. A great perimeter defender and on the other side of the ball, he can create his own shot to take some of the load off of Steph. He is also a very good three-point shooter. Last year George averaged 22.6 points with 5.2 rebounds per game while shooting 47.1% from the field. He can immediately be Golden State’s number two scoring option.
Warriors Need To Make Changes
If this report of the Warriors being willing to offer George a 4-year max is true, then the Warriors are going to have to make some serious moves to make the money work. Their 2023-24 team salary was the highest in the history of the NBA. The team failed to make the playoffs last season. They have to move off some of these players if they want to get their books to improve the team.
The decision that has been looming all year is what to do with Klay Thompson. Thompson has been part of the core of the Warrior dynasty since he was drafted in 2011. Klay is a future Hall of Famer and one of the greatest Warriors of all time. The last few years after his back-to-back devastating injuries have not been up to his standards. He is currently an unrestricted free agent. It will be interesting to see how this contract negotiation gets resolved. Will Klay be in another uniform next year?
Golden State still has big contracts with Chris Paul and Andrew Wiggins. If they want to break the bank with Paul George, they must move off one or both of these players. To go along with these two, Draymond Green still has three years left on his deal, but it appears that he is part of their future plans. The Warriors have limited time left with Steph Curry so they need to swing for the fences this offseason even if it means mortgaging the future after Curry.
